Sup guys, recently started posting in the tech talk section of this community again after a long hiatus :) Anyways, straight to the point. I've read tons and tons of reviews of Nvidia's DX11 supported line up of 4xx series cards. I've been looking around the talk tech section and I trust you guys know your stuff, but what I want to know is

*For people who actually own or have seen/used one first hand.

Do you prefer it over ATIs 5xxx series?
If you had a chance to go back to the 5xxx series... would you?
How huge are the cards in inches/centimeters?
Do you see any noticeable differences between this and the 5xxx series from ATI?
Do you like it?

And lastly, do you believe it's really worth burning a hole in your pocket for?

I have a 470.

1. Yeah. It has PhysX and is a ton better at tessellation. More on that later.
2. Probably not. For no reason in particular. I'm quite happy with my GPU.
3. Mine is 9.5". Now the graphics card is, too. ;) lol.
4. In normal games? Eh, it does perform slightly better than most 5850s and can compete with a stock 5870. Now if you factor in tessellation, oh boy is there a huge difference. On the Stone Giant benchmark, other users with 5850s and 5870s were getting around 45fps with a 955be or even an i7. I got 75fps. Yes, I did the test several times to make sure it wasn't a glitch or something.
5. I love it. It's my second of three children. The others being my monitor (1st) and my phone. :P

Yes, it was totally worth it. I can play games at Max no sweat. I can even add in some AA/AF.
 
I think the 4xx-series cards are sized as such:
GTX 470 - 9,5" (there are cards with 10,5")
GTX 480 - 10,5"

Now, sorry for breaking your "rules" but I do not own a 4xx-card nor have I seen one being used because none of my friends are that stupid to buy one.

I've been reading a lot of reviews about these particular cards and in comparison to ATi's 5xxx-series these cards flopped, hard. They also produce heat like ovens and there are videos floating around the internet where people are attempting to cook an egg on top of a GTX 480.

So no, even though GTX 480 is more powerful than my HD 4870, it'll be a cold day in hell if I get one of those. Though I could use a 8800GT or something similar as a PhysX-card.
 
Are you calling me stupid for buying one, then, Stormrider?
The heat is actually not as bad as people claim it to be. It's no hotter than my brother's 4870. His actually idles higher than mine by a lot. Mine idles around 43C, and his idles in the mid 50s.
 
Don't compare the GTX 4xx to an ATI 4xxx

I have tri-fire 4850's which perform on par to a 5870 in DX10

ATI 4xxx are notorious for their heat which was fixed in later revisions, basically cards after the 1st gen were fine

A GTX 4xx is amazing for tessellation.......only problem?? barely any games use that much to actually notice a difference.

Yes a GTX 4xx will be amazing in benchmarks like Heaven and stuff where its all about the DX 11 tessellation but in real world games, you won't see a huge difference.

GTX 470 is a bit better than a 5850, almost as good at a 5870 (they trade blows)......the ATI 5xxx seem to overclock better with the volt tuning software

GTX 480 trades blows with the 5970 but 5970 wins a majority of them from what i remember, its also 2 GPU's thats why.

GTX 4xx have some monstrous stock coolers but their temps are that bad.....they idle like 40's and load like 60's i think

Anyways, theres not much of a difference between the GTX and ATI HD cards right now.......GTX are definitely better geared towards tessellation but thats not being used enough yet to really bottleneck any of the cards or give the GTX a large lead over the ATI cards.

I would get an ATI just for the price as usual....theyre still the best bang for buck.

ATI is coming out with 6 series soon also btw (i've said this in like every post involving a GPU now lmao) expected end of this year to beginning of next year which seems reasonable for the 1 year lifespan of the 5 series

-google can be your friend...
-A 5970 typically blows the 480 out of the water in gaming applications. Even the 4890 beats the 480 in some situations.
-not for 500 dollars

I do not have a 400 series card but a friend of mine does.

nope, not at all. If you are using a video card strictly for gaming then the nvidia 400 series cards are probably a waste of money. You dont need fermi for playing games.

nope, not at all. If you are using a video card strictly for gaming then the nvidia 400 series cards are probably a waste of money. You dont need fermi for playing games.

Uh.. what the hell is a 4970?
And, of course the 5970 is better, it's 2 GPUs against 1.

But I agree, the 480 is not worth it. It's just too much more than a 5870 and too close to a 5970 in price but not close enough in performance.
The 470 however, is a nice in between card, and when you overclock it, it becomes beastly. I have about a 10-15fps boost in tessellation benchmarks and Metro 2033.

I think that 100% increase was for just cause 2 wasnt it? Yeh I installed the beta 257 drivers on my laptop for my SLI 280's but took it right back off because crashes on source games.

I guess now that the WHQL version is out I should run some benches.

Wow, if you flamed just a bit harder the thread would catch fire. You don't have to be such a hardcore ATi fanboy... You could of simply said you'd prefer the 5xxxx series. The 4xx series cards are definitely NOT bad, at all. Drivers are getting better and better. I have a 5770 and I regret buying it. I will be getting a 470 soon regardless. I'd rather pay for peace mind and good drivers LOL.
 
Agreeing with Rusty and Phobus. Implying that anyone who buys a 4xx series is stupid is just not nice especially coming from an admin. I would not touch a 480, however the Gigabyte "superoverclock" 470 is on my waiting list once it releases. The 470 benches are ok at stock, not crazy at all. Its once you break the 700 core clock where you see some serious action.
