...Do it. I played my first few games today. I was expecting the "I'm awesome, and will give you crap for being n00b" nonsense that usually comes with higher play in games, but for the most part it was good times. And it's like playing a whole new game.

On a side note, after that, I played some PropHunt games. Talk about contrast. lol

Nowadays, PUB (yes that is pub, not pug)>TF2 Lobby. tf2.pug.na is still strong though.

Ya I pretty much only play pugs now. I'm looking into getting into the competitive scene, and im getting pretty serious about it. :)
On a side note. If you think TF2lobby is hard, thats where the scrubs play. Try playing tf2.pug.na..... Thats where the big boys play! :o

Well, I haven't try any of these two, but I don't understand the point of playing 6 vs 6 when you can find a server that is half full if that's what you want ?

A pick up game has class restrictions: 1 medic, 1 demo, 2 of the rest. Also, it's pretty much understood if you're playing a PUG that the gameplay is totally different and you're playing to win. Half empty server = 4 spies, 6 snipers, 0 medics, and neither team going anywhere. Also, half empty server can fill. PUG is 6v6 max.

I think tf2lobby is a good intro to the world of competition, really. It works well for getting you the basic training through example. That said, unlike the OP, I certainly have experienced a number of matches where there are really terrible elitist players that make the game no fun; the amount of flak you'll take for being new to it really depends heavily upon which class you play.

If you're a scout, not many people are going to mind if you don't know your way around; the demo is mostly the same way. I notice that it's the soldiers and the medics that take the most flak for being 'terrible'. Pocket Soldiers need to not jump away and leave their medic defenseless (which, since I play medic, I tend to notice a lot), and I've played with a number who do and don't tend to realize it. Plus, if you're the medic, you need to know who to give healing preference to, and I guarantee that if you're playing with an experienced team, everyone will have different opinions about that order of healing, and some will be vocal about it.

But: long story short, I agree heartily with the OP. go out and do it!

tf2.pug.na is good for those of us who already know some about competitive play, but for newbies TF2 Lobby is a much easier and friendlier environment to get into 6v6 play.

Is there some trick to tf2.pug.na that I don't know about, or are servers down for everyone?

PUGing in tf2lobby is a great way to get your feet wet in competitive play to see if you really like it. Even though I hear eGO has a league of its own *cough cough*.

lol I'm on a league team! I went to TF2Lobby to make sure I didn't completely fail once our league matches roll around =P

Just stick to Blackmesa or Turbine. You'll get somewhere someday somehow. Like I almost did.

Actually if your new and your a demo you'll get tons of flak because the demoman needs to know how to get to mid the fastest, stick with his team, cover flank spots, lay traps. etc even if you're not aggressive enough you might take some flak. And pretty much every team who knows what there doing will agree on the heal order. Demoman, soldier, soldier, and if you have time scout scout. The only thing that is debatable is the importance of the scout and soldier in which class is more important. Some say the soldier some say the scout.
