Stormy here,

I just got done reading a thread that got me pretty mad, I mean like when the hulk buys a new pair of pant then gets angry and ruins them mad! Anyways, one of the major differences between eGO and all of the other clans out there is the dedication of our members and how we interact with each other as well as pubs. When I read a thread that started off as a bounty but slowly rolled into a big pile of accusations and immature banter well, it got me into the typing mood!

I just want to remind you all that we are a great community because we avoid flaming and trolling at all costs. For any of you who have been in other clans or forums you know how counterproductive and plain annoying a bunch of jerkfaces scrutinizing everything you do can be (i.e. Stormese). Now we all have fun walking on the border of what is acceptable and pushing the limits with people who know they are being joked around with. However, when eight or so individuals feel the need to scrutinize a player?s every move then I would say that crosses the line of what is acceptable. Now im a grown man and I have been ready to crack some skulls more than a few times, but what makes me even angrier than someone attacking me is someone attacking one of my friends. I may not be able to choke you out through the internet (yet) but put yourself in the other person?s shoes and see how you would feel having people you play with on a regular basis scrutinize every action you?ve taken for the last year.

To the point: Man up, play nice, and don?t make Stormy angry!!!!

In some of the threads of late I have noticed a tendency to attack the credentials of the people making posts rather than addressing the aspects of the thread which expresses an opinion that differs from yours. Such posts are usually met by emotional counterposts of posters coming to the defense of themselves or others. In extreme cases the entire point of the thread becomes lost and a few people post back and forth riling each other up.

It's ugly, unprofessional and leads to ill mannered behavior and worse.

There is a better way to handle it.

When trying to resolve an issue determine what not who is wrong.
Before you post ask yourself. Have I made my point or am I just upsetting someone. Calling someone (fill in your own depreciating phrase) isn't nearly as rewarding as demonstrating that they are incorrect in a way that will have your reader nodding and saying "Wish I had said that". The whole name calling thing is best left on the playground. Dare I say...it is not mature.

(If you want to attack someone we have games where mayhem is encouraged. Feel free to use the servers.)

Saturday Night Live used to feature a point and counterpoint session with Dan Akroyd and Jane Curtin. Dan would always start off with "Jane you ignorant ..." It was funny because it was a stupid way to start a discussion. In logical rhetoric the technique is called poisoning the well. Let's leave the poison to the exterminators.

We keep the servers punk free. We can do the same with the forums.

Thank you for your kind attention.

This is a little old but I think it addresses similar issues to what Stormy has brought up. "Keep it friendly please".

Thanks Quaffer, as always you bring a sense of rationality and wisdom to the conversation.

Now when I go on a rant about something I usually do it for a reason. Unfortunately I got to the original post after it was closed or I would have voiced my concerns there. But the main problem I saw was that a few jokes started to spiral out of control. When I wrote this thread I was a bit irate. Let me be clear that when I say I want to choke someone out over the internet that?s just raw uncontrollable rage talking. In reality I would have liked to set things straight from the beginning. This incident was one that really got to me because it seemed like everyone was teaming up against one person, and I can?t tolerate that in real life or over the internet. I?m sorry for dragging Erich and everyone involved into this thread but I believe that addressing it and analyzing the cause of it will help in preventing it.

There is one thing I omitted from the thread and that decision started wearing on me while I was at work. It was about the only member who manned up and saw where the conversation was going and tried to steer it in the right direction-- Sumac. Everyone makes mistakes but when you can admit them it shows your true character.

To sum it up: I regret dragging everyone into this new thread but it?s important to realize mistakes so we can avoid them in the future, especially with all of our new recruits.

This is really needed. I wish some people in IRC would read this.

Since some don't seem to get this:

Rules in server apply to forums too, follow them.

Especially don't go about flaming people. Keep those thoughts to yourself, or share it with them if they want to hear your criticism or know you are joking, and you are.

Yeah, things like being able to control yourself to a certain degree and respecting the other guys are things that set eGO apart from so many other clans and are reasons why people feel so comfortable here, so I totally agree with you, attacking people until they really feel bad is just not acceptable, even on the internet or in a game.

Let me be clear when i say that the intentions of the people posting in the original thread werent originally to attack another member, it just ended up that way. So when you see things going downhill do something positive about it.

Or Woman Up :P

/Agree +1 thread

Youre right, man OR woman up! ;)

im not good enough to put myself in the shoes of those who are flammed, i suck at dod:s lol
