COM surrogate has stopped working

everytime i open up a file that has a movie clip or such in it
i keep getting this pop up
"COM surrogate has stopped working"
and its halting me from doing a lot of things like splice videos together and such

i need help, its getting annoying and im about to take my dads 9 iron to my $1,400 computer

Ahhhh I remember this problem, I had the exact same problem and I believe it was something to do with the codecs, I remember saving a website with a solution. What I can remember from it was try updating all your programmes.. Here's the link to the solution.
