So I've been thinking about this for a while now, but I just want some of your guys' opinions.
I was thinking of selling my current build, and building a new one that could be upgradeable to an i7 (but the 1156 platform, not 1366. Still good, just not as many PCI-E lanes, which is no problem).
The core components of the new build are as follows:
Core i3
GIGABYTE H55 (able to take an i7)
4GB DDR3 1600MHz Corsair memory
ASUS GTX 470 (I just got mine, and I still feel that I haven't used all of its potential yet.)

If you guys want to know the rest, I can tell you.
So what do you guys think?

Why wouldn't you take a i7-860 right off the bat, or something similar, like a i5. I don't think you want to go as low as a i3 for gaming.

Money. Lol.
I mean if I had the money, I'd get the i7 930, dual GTX 470s, tri-3d monitors, a sick sound set-up, Corsair 800D with all components watercooled with a 360mm rad on top and a Corsair AX1200 (when it comes out) with dual OCZ Vertex drives in RAID 0 plus two 1TB Caviar Black drives in RAID 1.
But, I don't have that kind of money. lol.

E/ And I'm gaming just fine on my Athlon II 240, and the i3 is better and can overclock to 4GHz easily, so that makes it even better.

True.. but your essentially selling a whole rig to build a new one with (less)DDR3 ram, a new processor, and re buying the same graphics card.

I mean it's nice and all to help murph, it just puts you in a bad position. Would be -way- easier to save your 470, case, psu etc and just use it in a new i7 rig that you could afford since you don't have to spend the money on another 470.

Rigs are extremely fun to build (for me anyway), but doing all this just kind of seems like a hassle.

No, not murph. He can't buy from the internet, remember? I'm talking about like craigslist.
And it doesn't put me in a bad position. And about the ram, I just game, and sometimes photoshop, so I never actually utilize it.
I can see your point, but I don't think you see mine. I could use this build as a guide for building, and it would be much, much, much better for overclocking. Plus I don't mind re-buying the 470. I've priced everything and it all comes up even. But exactly even. lol

Ah, I thought you were just doing it because he needed a rig. Yeah that makes sense, you don't actually have the money so the money from selling it is going to be used to rebuilt it.

Do you not have the 50-90$ extra (going from a i3 to i5) to get like a i5-750? It would just make it a lot more solid imo.

Going from a dual to a quad makes a pretty large difference, rather you not go from a dual to a dual. Things like bad company 2 will appreciate a quad a ton.

For what you want tah do, I suppose it is fine. The i3 will still do fine for gaming for now and OC'ing ensures you won't bottleneck.

The main point is to setup the rig for an i7 down the road so go for it if the price is dead even.

The i3 can hold him easily til next year and then he can have his choice of the new line of Intel products so it's not a bad move at all.

Either way, going for a i3 or i5 will be nice coming from a dual core.

I do not. I don't have a job yet, just out of high school and about to go into college.

I don't plan on having this long, once I get a loan for college, I'm going to use a little of the money for the i7, the rest is for transportation/books (which come first ofc)

iX series=not as godly as everyone thinks

I just have one so i can fold 24/7, If i didn't fold so much i would have stuck with the X6

Yeah. And to reply,
I know, but I'm sure an i3 @ 4GHz would do just fine. Plus, I don't even have Bad Company 2 yet. :/
Oh, gotcha. That's the only game I'd really be worried about, no matter how high the frequency of your dual in bc2 it eats them alive. Going from a dual to a quad in that game gives you like 20 fps ><

Other than that, yeah for the games you play a i3 @ 4ghz will work perfectly, the oc will make it so much better.

Then once you can, just pop it out and put in a i7 and you'll be good to go.

Now the only problem is actually selling your rig :P

Lol what's the supposed to mean? :sneaky2:

Well I have 8GB = REALLY FAST
And a 470 = REALLY GOOD
and my 240 @ 3GHz = SUPER FAST
So, I think it can be done. I've done it before.
