Unoffical New Engie Weapon Discussion

Alright... next weapon is out, and it's a doozie.

The Gunslinger:
  • Replaces Pistol
  • Increases Health by 25 points
  • Allows punching combos, where the 3rd consecutive hit always crits
  • allows user to drop mini sentries.
  • Mini sentry only costs 100 metal and has 1/4th the build time of the regular sentry
  • mini-sentries cannot be upgraded or repaired
  • they do half the damage of regular sentries

Holy crap. Melee secondary. TWO melee weapons. and it allows quick battle sentries. Holy crap batman! They just gave the engineer the option of being completely battle oriented. FJ, mini sentries and the gunslinger for offense, fj/ wrangler for offensive/ defensive variation. Bloody excellent show.

Although... 2 melee weapons? and better yet, a 150 health class? even with the guaranteed extra crit, that's dubious, at best. opinions?

YES! I have begged for battle sentries. One of my favorite frontline tactics is to drop a level one and then run away, letting it be a distraction/secondary attack/guardian/surprise.

And it said mini-sentrieS, and you have enough metal for two. Can I have multiple sentries on the field? If so, this is my favorite update ever. One thing I've wanted for a long time was to be able to lay a field of fire from multiple angles. A sentry gun is nice, but it's an easy mark. TWO sentry guns... and now you've got to decide on priorities! Not to mention nothing stops a rush like a string of sentries. Even when they're not vital, nobody can say no to a cheap point, even if it gives me more time to prepare for them. I like.

(I'm thinking, two battle sentries flanking the vent exit on Turbine. Or flanking sentries in the hallway of Turbine. Or sentries flanking the crooked hallway door of Turbine. I'm sure the sentries will be useful elsewhere than Turbine, but let's not get crazy here. ALL POWERED BY ONE GOD LIKE ENGIE.)

A thought about the Wrangler, as I'm way late to the conversation; I can't imagine they'd limit the range of the sentry while under the influence of the Wrangler, however, I do believe that when you pull the Wrangler out, the sentry goes crazy go nuts and just starts firing like mad. And the only way to make it stop is to make it cool off for 3 seconds.

So the idea of putting a sentry on the battlements of Teufort and pegging snipers with it... not so hot. You'll blow a quarter of your ammo and then have to wait for the sentry to cool off, or just let it empty itself out. And that's after the time investment of building the sentry and hoping nobody kills it.

I can see this being devistating with two engineers, a sentry, a wranger, and two dispensers. A dispenser for the Wranger Engineer, shooting the opposite battlements. The Sentry, going crazy go nuts. The second engineer camping the sentry, spamming it with his wrench, backed up with a second dispenser. THAT IS AN AWESOME IDEA. Can't wait to try it out :D

If You Build It, They Will Die
Haul a level 3 sentry gun into a position that achieves a kill shortly after being redeployed.

TEXAS_RANGER.jpg
Texas Ranger
Haul buildings one kilometer over your career.

So Lvl 3 sentries can be moved now? Did I miss something? this is awesome :)

Pownd on the Range
Kill 10 enemies outside the normal sentry gun range using the Wrangler.

So, this confirms the wrangler increases the max range on a sentry. Interesting...

Oh lord, they just killed the Gunslinger for me as a serious weapon (although still fun for fun). It used to replace the pistol, but it was a typo: it replaces the WRENCH. Meaning, you can't build or repair anything. You stop being an engineer, and become a punching, guaranteed crit cannon with no useful buildings.

Or at least, that's my take on it at the moment. we're gonna see :p

MORE SUBSTANTIAL EDIT:

New community wrench stats:

The Southern Hospitality:
  • No random crits
  • On Hit: 5 second bleed
  • 20% extra damage taken from fire.

Sort of a 'meh' as far as I care... the gunslinger is more substantive, and this is really not going to do much. Plus, I don't think I would trade a 5 second bleed for random crits. Plus, the fire damage thing is unnecessary. I feel like this weapon will never be used :p

The stats for new weapons are DIFFERENCES from the original. I think the Gunslinger will definitely still repair buildings. Btw, Dread, you're the master of TL;DR. Good thing I am a speed reader.

Maybe you're right Zeu5, but what's he going to do, punch the sentries? Dunno. we'll see.

Also:

That's SOOOO close to becoming a sig quote for me... it's just full right now, and I think I like what I have. I'll have to do some soul searching though; that made me smile :D

Yeah that's what we need, more dumb community weapons with no thought put into them. Those attributes don't even make sense, let alone are they useful.

Gunslinger repairs sentries and buildings like the regular wrench. It just replaces the sentry gun slot with the mini sentry gun. You can only have 1 sentry gun with the Gunslinger.

With the wrangler you can control when it fires and it does fire well past normal sentry gun range.

Interesting. Now only time will tell if it's actually useful.

I would love the gunslinger if you could build more than 1 sentry, unfortunately you cant and that really kills this weapon for me since the sentries are so damn weak.

The new shotty is interesting and I have yet to earn the "wrangler"
But the fist is FUUUUUUUN. You can punch things to upgrade them. Best update item ever

Has anyone else rocket jumped with the sentry yet? Its pretty cool. Lets you get to places you normally couldnt go :)

FACT: The wrangler will be nerfed. In many cases it's unlimited range is ridiculously strong, if not unbeatable. Build a level 3, move it to 2fort battlements, and you can shoot their snipers. Put one in the sewers and you can shoot all the way to the stairs. One next to the building in Dustbowl cap B point A, and you can shoot everyone as they come out of spawn. And to top that off, the sentry takes 66% less damage and does more.

I don't see this lasting.

Well, in the past things were called overpowered, weren't nerfed, and we learned to deal with them. That might be the case with the Wrangler, as it seems like it would be pretty easy to take out with a spy or a few rockets. Since the engineer is incapacitated while controlling his sentry, once it got sapped he would have to de-Wrangle and get his bearings. That and people can now kill the engie before killing his sentry since the Wrangler leaves a 3 second cooldown on the sentry, during which it's back to normal health, not the souped-up health from the Wrangler.

EDIT: Then again, I wouldn't know, as I'm on vacation until Monday, meaning no TF2 since my netbook can't run it.

I am calling it, the Gunslinger is the most fun weapon in this update. This update makes combat engies infinitely more viable.

Sounds good. Definitely gonna try it when I get home, because I was playing combat engie before these fancy unlocks.

My new Gunslinger tactic without even trying out how the thing works...

Toss down the sentry as a distraction, when it start firing at some sucker who then focuses solely on the sentry, come out from your hiding spot and smack em around with your fist of fury.

Alright folks, We've been playing with this gear for a day now. What are your thoughts? Allow me to put mine down:

Let's get the FJ over with: It's a straight upgrade. Never in my 5-6 hours of play so far has ammo been a problem. The crits are brilliant, but I believe as someone said earlier, you still have to aim it. I remember the first time I got the crit boost, I had 3 crits. Another engie came near me, and I sorta freaked out with excitement. Shot him 3 times, basically missed every time, and he killed me. Still have to aim the thing. I deem it balanced, and a powerful upgrade.

The Gunslinger is a more interesting thing to talk about. Trading a big sentry for a tiny one doesn't seem like a good trade, but I've killed a good chunk of people with my tiny sentry in the past day. They're hard to notice sometimes; I don't believe they beep like the regular ones do (until they acquire a target, of course) meaning that they only indicator for their presence is the big alarm light on top of them, and if you're not paying attention, it's easy to miss.

I've put those little guys in all sorts of corners and they've killed a lot of people. Better yet, if you put them in and around a bigger sentry, they can just get kill after kill because the person will assume it's the big sentry. I had a mini-sentry get 4 kills and 9 assists today. That's 17 revenge crits for a fire-and-forget gun that only costs half of your metal. plus, as soon as it dies you can almost always throw up another one immediately. plus, 2.5 second deploy time is stupid fast. Especially when you hit it, and it becomes 1.25.

Also, to clear up any confusion, you can build all the other buildings with the hand; it's just the sentry that's changed. The hand itself is nothing special... I don't think I've ever done a combo crit, because it's actually quite difficult to hit someone three times in a row without them dying. However, like the DH's mini-crits on air hits, I don't think it's meant to be a core part of the gun; it's supposed to be a marginal bonus.

The wrangler. I haven't had mine long enough to really put a good decision down, but at the moment, I actually don't really like it. It's probably because of the experience I had (I hate Egypt, and that was the only eGO server that was empty), but even though your sentry is basically invulnerable except to concentrated, deliberate fire, just standing there and aiming is difficult and it leaves you vulnerable. Yes, you can snipe, and yes, it's ungodly powerful, but I need to play with it more. I haven't really had the opportunity to exploit the range or power of it yet, so I need to do that tonight. So, disregard the biased opinion here; it's mostly just me playing crappily, I would assume. More testing required.

So, that's my early take on it. What about you guys?
