What would you upgrade with $1k?

I don't think overclocking is really necessary unless you have a 3k computer with liquid cooling so you can get a REAL performace boost. Anyhow, I think a SSD as a boot drive is as big of an upgrade like going from a C2D to an i7.

overclocking gives a big boost even when your not on liquid cooling...........on GPU's a really good overclock like the ATI 1000mhz core ones can give a 5850 the same performance as a stock 5870 and even beat it out by 2-3 FPS if you get 1050mhz on a 5850.

In terms of CPU, overclocking a CPU helps more in terms of bottlenecking the GPU, if you overclock an i7 to 4.0ghz theres pretty much no bottlenecking the GPU especially since we're going SLI/Crossfire and it helps give some FPS boost. I'd say it can help around ~5 FPS.

Overclocking is well worth it

Overclocking helps my computer tremendously. If I didn't overclock, my GPU would be horribly, horribly bottlenecked.
And I do see a real performance boost going from 607 core to 700, and again from 700 to 770.
So yes, overclocking is worth it.

Ok so, INCLUDING the OS (Windows 7 Ultimate) and a Heatsink (Corsair A70 or whatever you said earlier)... Is there ANYTHING at all that I need to include in order for this thing to start pwning???

A 27" LCD Monitor, and order a second ATI 4890 via eBay. Other then that, maybe some games or something :P

Yea i know the HX series are the best hahaha.....and yea i guess, Gigabyte certainly makes good motherboards, i just prefer EVGA sometimes since theyre more geared towards gaming and overclocking.

The one brand i would pick over any nowadays.......ASUS all day every day, they are just pure amazing in every category now.

no

the HX1000 is not the best AT ALL! There are much better 1K PSUs including:
Enermax Revolution
Enermax Galaxy
Coolmax CUQ-1350 (I kid you not)
The list goes on.

The HX1000 is based off a really old design, and is not worth the price they charge. At most it is a $170 PSU

Now the HX750/850 are great units, but once again, they are outclassed by other units for similar prices:
XFX 750w Black edition (Based on the SAME EXACT UNIT as the HX750, also available in 850w)

And for just $30 more, you can get the Seasonic X750. The seasonic is 80+ GOLD, has unsurpassed ripple suppression, and outclasses the HX750 in every category.

I'm sorry, but the HX series is not the best.

Keyboard, mouse, monitor?

One of the best??? Certainly good from reviews i've read, of course i havn't really followed computer stuff as hardcore as i did a whiles back. They're certainly expensive though and perform up to the task. Oh well, who really cares, its a PSU.....CPU/GPU etc...are where its at.

A good PSU is almost as important. But if it has at least an 80 PLUS Bronze, then it should be good.

um no again

A crap PSU with high ripple, will destroy components.

I'm sorry, but PSU is pretty important.

Alright, honestly im just joking around, take a little big of sarcasm.

Obviously if you get the crappiest PSU, your computer will run shit and maybe just explode for all i care.

But its almost common sense to just read up on something before you buy it......if something is consistently getting 1 star from reviewers.....are you honestly going to buy that PSU??? I'd say no.......and yea i know about ripples and all that crap which affects overclocking etc....

Honestly......it's a PSU. Are you saying you would splash more money on a PSU than a CPU/GPU??? Idk but i wouldn't. I would just get a PSU that gets good reviews and performs great while having a decent price.

Look at my Tuniq 1000w......i read up on it, found out it was better than most, and bought it considering it was on sale for $80 when it retailed for $160 and it's been doing great for me, my overclocks are fine etc...

W/e, i'd like to just end the conversation on PSU's

Almost any 930 can achieve 4.2ghz with under 1.35vcore, im running mine at 1.328vcore in windows and 4.0 only requires 1.23. Was even able to get my RAM which was stock 1333 7-7-7-20 to 1870mhz using 9 9 9 24 and 1.66vdimm and upping the qpi to 1.355 . Did figure out my heat problem last night and all is well now, full load gets me to 82c with HT on, prolly gonna leave it off for the summer . Its been pretty hot here lately and my AC cannot keep up so well.

And as a member posted a couple pages back, an SSD will do amazing things for you. Yea yea too much cost per gig, you get what you pay for. Buy a cheap $50 1000 watt PSU and it'll likely suicide, probably taking some of your components with it.

Here is what I am planning on ordering at the end of the day.... if you have anything you would like to change, explain why and i'll consider it. (Please note the Corsair A70 will not be available for purchase for like another month... I dont wanna wait lol, so that is why there is a different heatsink on there.)

We can't see your wishlists, you have to take a screen shot or make it public and wait about an hour or two for it to be accepted.

And you could buy the A70 from Tiger Direct, maybe.

Ok so essentially it is the same build that Phobus posted, plus a 1080p LCD monitor, a Razer mouse, and a G15 keyboard. The heatsink i put on there is the ZALMAN CNPS10X Flex CPU Cooler.

Mouse:RAZER Lachesis Banshee Blue 9 Buttons 1 x Wheel USB Wired Laser Gaming Mouse
Monitor: ASUS VH242H Black 23.6" 5ms HDMI Full 1080P Widescreen LCD Monitor
Keyboard: Logitech G15 2-Tone USB Wired Standard Gaming Keyboard
Heatsink: ZALMAN CNPS10X FLEX CPU Cooler

Also thinking of adding a Blu Ray Burner in a few weeks...

Ah okay.
If you don't mind spending the extra money,
you should look into an ASUS VW246H. I have one, and my god is it amazing.

Ya I was looking into that, however I need to put that extra money towards books and tuition. The only reason I am able to do this is because of my tax return... lol. Thanks Government. :)

Werd.....i like the Asus monitors also, they're great for the price too.

That CPU heatsink is good....but i would recommend getting a Prolimatech Megahalem and a high output fan as done in these tests. It's still the best along with the new venomous-x.
Check out the tests and temperatures here: http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.p...k=view&id=432&Itemid=62&limit=1&limitstart=20

Heres the megahalem: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...2001&cm_re=prolimatech-_-35-242-001-_-Product

Of course, the fans they used are ridiculous and your computer would be really loud, but hey, you want the best performance, thats the result.

As for mouse, i would recommend a Logitech G9x.....it's one of the best mice out there and it's fairly cheap.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104261&Tpk=G9x

Ridiculous rebate but i wouldn't really count on it......it's a steal though if the rebate goes through for $50

Ordered. Shipping. Will be here in 3 days. Any special instructions/hints/etc that I should know when putting all of this stuff together? SLI info (not sure if there is special instructions on setting the system up this way)? Settings info? Anything at all will help as this is my first build from scratch.

Thanks again everyone.
