recon is naturally the easiest until you unlock some better weapons and perks.

Recon IS easy, but it is a bad way of helping the team well. I would say medic or assault to start off with. Also, if you don't have any other battlefield games, download Battlefield Heroes for free and link it to your ea account. This gives you veteran status, which unlocks some things like the med kit and defibulators, as well as the M1 Garand.
