Hey guys I just got my new rig, i posted before asking some advice on what to get as for parts and this the final specs of my new system/your guys thoughts.
Case: CoolerMaster HAF 922
CPU: Core i5 750 2.66GHz (Turbo Boost 3.2)
Mobo: gigabyte p55a-usb3
gpu: nvidia EVGA GTX 470 superclocked
ram: 4GB major brand
Power: 700 W generic brand

uhh I kinda went budget, this system did cost me under $1000 with Windows 7 inc. I think its gonna satisfy my needs for the current games and maybe next gen with some nice tweakage. ive read that the p55a-usb3 is fairly good to overclock thru the BIOS although I did go budget on the cooling as I do think Intel heatsinks or fans with some arctic silver on them are just as effective as those colourful light show in a box ones are, and the directx 11 EVGA GTX 470 should make me set.

Looks pretty good, but you shouldn't try OC with the stock fan even if u use an aftermarket paste, you could get a decent HS for just $40, just my advice.

Yea.....i would overclock that i5, you should be able to reach maybe like 3.2ghz with stock cooling with arctic silver possibly less though.

Overclock the GPU more......superclocked cards by EVGA are amazing and you should be able to get some more out of it, especially with voltage tweaking.

Everything else should be fine, what resolution do you play at??? The GTX 470 should hold up really well no matter what, it's a great card.

Edit: yea i would recommend aftermarket cooling though, there are great cheap solutions out there that perform in the high end category. But stock isn't bad, i had a Q6600 before on stock and got a 3.2ghz overclock with safe temps.

Oh Yea. Get a cheap Coolermaster 212+ , between 20-30 bucks depending where you find it. Does a fine job if your on a budget, otherwise get yourself a Noctua or even a Corsair H50. I have always loved Gigabyte boards and there BIOS. Easy to get the hang of and generally very flexible/reliable. Get tbat 470 over 700 mhz on the core and you got a monster living in your box. Nice stuff.

Dude, the 212+ is no longer 20-30 bucks. It's more like $60.

And for that 470, try 770 core and 1800 mem in MSI Afterburner. Best GPU OCing program ever. But don't forget to register your 470 at EVGA, then get the EVGA OC Scanner. Best GPU OCing tool ever. Just run that full screen native res of your monitor for 10 minutes and if there is no artifacts, consider yourself stable.
 
thanks guys for the responses, they really helpful.

The reason why i got the HAF 922 was so that I can continuously upgrade this rig as I go, so ya I probably will upgrade the cooling at some point, but temps dont really give me trouble atm. I play at 1920x1080 if anyone was wondering, and can play max settings on every game right now (CS:S, Medal of Honor, Need for Speed, Starcraft 2). And generally I dont overclock the CPU as much compared to the GPU because I find its more effective since games are usually more GPU intensive.

btw thank you Phobus I am going to try these gpu clocks.
 
CPU helps, with bottlenecking. You should be fine ATM since your only running one GTX 470.

Overclocking to 4ghz will probably give you like 5 FPS boost i say, just a guess.

Since you got a GTX 470 superclocked very good card by EVGA and meant to be overclocked..........you should easily be able to get the speeds Phobus attained with his own GTX 470, idk about the clocks he posted though, it's fairly high.

I would say more of like a 730mhz core and that memory overclock looks way too high...1800mhz compared to the 1250mhz on the superclocked???

Anyways, yea you don't really need to overclock the CPU yet though it would be nice in the future.

Actually for source games, ocin'g helps your fps a lot more than just 5 fps. Source games are all CPU dependent.
 
your PSU WILL explode if you try to OC

Since you don't even know the brand, I would guess that it can barely output 300w. Ripple will probably be way out of spec etc etc.


just saying, you might want to invest in a better one


My suggestion would have been to get a 465, Possibly unlock it to a 470, and use the money saved on a decent PSU.

Really, reflex?
Unlocking a 465 to a 470 can either result in 33% success, or 66% unstable or even a brick. And no, those are not numbers I just made up. Some review site got some unlockable 465's and only 3 of the 12 were successful, there rest were either unstable or bricked, like I said.

And PewPew, my GPU overclock is pretty mild, check out OCN. Several others have higher clocks than mine. I've seen someone with a 890 core.

Plus the 1250 is the shader clock, not the memory. I have mine at 900MHz @ 4 for GDDR5, and stock is somewhere like 837 I think. Pretty mild. But, that's as high as I can go, sadly.
And, overclocking the CPU does yield results, much more noticeable than 5 fps. Psh. :sleep:



And, make sure you download the latest Beta for MSI Afterburner so you can adjust the voltages. If you want to get even higher OC's, flash the 470 BIOS to 480 BIOS and you can bump the volts to 1.213 (as to 1.087)
 
Werd the gtx 465 to 470 is really just a lottery pick. There's a reason why their 465's and not 470's. Usually problems that don't allow them to perform up to 470 specs so they use them for 465's to save money. ATI does the same. Sometimes ppl get lucky and it was a good chip etc..

Reading up on the gtx 480 makes me want one lol

Why? You'd probably lose performance compared to your Tri-fire 4850s. Well, maybe.

naw....my 4850's perform at about a 5870. Of course really I don't need any more performance right now....I'm not playing any intensive games that need more anyway. But you know how it is...that feeling to just wan to have it and to have the best lol it's and addiction.

Still, I would rather have a PSU that doesn't have an 80% chance of failure and suffer the 15% less performance.

Oh yea, Contagion on OCN got a 960MHz core on his 470 (VOLT MOD SQUAD FTW!!!!!!!)

Pick up a real power supply, then overclock.
 
I only played the Bad Company 2 beta but i got the full game for Xbox 360 cuz my friends wanted to play Live.

Never actually realized the guy who made this thread only bought a "Generic Power Supply".....yea that i would never trust with my components

So yea....he should definitely get a better PSU if he wants to overclock.
 
to OP, when you run your rig, can you video tape?

I wanna see the fireworks!
