Need help- Confused while switching

hello everyone. merry Christmas.

I have a problem, my old graphics card was dying (geforce 6800xt) and i got one for Christmas, a (Radeon x1300? pro?)

anyways i installed the card and ran the driver, when i went to open DOD:s or any hl2.exe game it will load to the video clip of the valve in the guys skull. then when it tries to go past that it minimizes and exits.

any help?

ive been on steam support and steam forums and havent found anything.

turned off my firewall and nothing different..

now i ask.
 
Question 1, did you completely uninstall the old drivers before installnig the new card and new drivers? In my experiance ans well as my roomate's a few months ago, ATI can be the biggest pain in the butt when installing nw drivers if the old ones arent uninstalled first correctly.

Second - do you have other games to try to see if they will run - i am curious if it is a steam problem or a game problem. It could be that your in game settings (which were for the old card) do not work with the new card. For example, allowing HDR and then putting in a card which doesnt support HDR.
I am not sure if i remember hwo to change video options form outside the game, but if someone could kindly post and refresh my memory it could be helpfull. Or you might reinstall the game - that should reset your settings.
 
yes it worked with my previous card.

and i didnt uninstall the old drivers first, but i have uninstalled all display drivers and reconnected the card then reinstalled the drivers. which i assumed would fix that problem.

i have ran DODS with the steam suggested debug controls which turn off sound and force DX7 but it did not change the outcome.
 
I guess I cant say I know much about the debug thing - since i dont know anything about it. I still think I would get the latest drivers from the website and then reinstall steam.

nothing worked? strangly enough this happen to me 30 minutes ago. I was like hmmm,... now its happening to me. All I did was exit steam completely and restart it and now it works fine. Not sure whatelse to say then. I guess I would fill out a steam form for help at steampowered.com then.

ATI and VisionTek(card maker)

have different drivers...
