Valve maps used to be my 1st choice, but for some reason I never gained rank and felt a bit mad knowing that I was alot better than my 280 + rank. So I decided to go where most of the better ranks play at, Blackmesa. Now my rank is 22 and climbing, where else could you drop 260 + ranks so fast, my nephew is also dropping rapidly in the ranks and is near the 50 mark :P. No other sever can do that, but if its a wide variety of maps you like join valve maps.

... Derp. I'mma go play Blackmesa now because that explains why my rank SUCKS.

Generally speaking, everyone knows valve maps and pl maps and 2fort and eygpt and turbine. They're all valve maps, and that means that it's easy for random players to check out our servers. They know the map, and they're just checking out the attitude.

That's awesome. I love new players and I like when people visit our servers. But there's a problem, governed by these two little equations:

Killer Points = Killer Points + (Victim Points / Killer Points)
? Weapon Modifier ? 5

Victim Points = Victim Points - (Victim Points / Killer Points)
? Weapon Modifier ? 5

So, let's look at when a new player, playing sniper, kills me on 2fort. All new players start with 1000 points. I currently have 56,822 points.

Killer points = Killer points + (56822/1000) x 5 (sniper rifle modifier is 1) = 284 points.

Now it should be noted that the maximum change in points from any one action in hlxstats is 25. So even though he actually earned 284 points, he actually gained 25 and I lost 25. What if I killed him in the same way?

Killer points = Killer points + (1000/56822) x 5 = ~0.1

Now, just as the maximum change is 25, the minimum change is 2 points for a kill (there are some actions that give you 1 point, such as extinguishing a teammate or getting a double kill; they're bonus points). So, he would loose 2 and I would gain 2.

By that math, I have to have a 13:1 KDR while killing him in order to actually progress, point wise. Even the noobiest of noobs will get lucky, and generally more often than one would expect. Thus, I hemorrhage points on any other eGO server.

in Mesa, however, most of the highest ranked players play. That means killing them actually gets me more points, and if I die, I lose less. There are still people that I don't know that show up in mesa all the time, but I know most of the regulars. The reason all of our high-ranked regulars go there is because it's a custom map; a new player isn't going to want to wait for a map download, they're going to want to play. Also, they get confused if they do; mesa is a confusing map the first few times.

So there. Long-winded explanation as to why stats are free on mesa. It still takes a good chunk of effort to get into the top 50, but it isn't nearly as hard as trying to maintain a 13:1 KDr on 2fort.

Egypt! super fun for engies, offense and defense :D

oh just a random question, how does one get that nifty Team Fortress 2 sig right below the avatar?

Blackmesa: great map and players. There's the stats thing, but I also enjoy playing against other good players. Kinda helps me know where I'm at I guess.

Valve maps. Why? Because I love payload, and I love Dustbowl, and I love 32 slots.

Why not Mesa? It's like a mapmaking utility threw up on a canvas and that's what was created...it's a mishmash of ugly shapes, poor pacing, and maze-like corridors with a fish at the bottom.

Why not PL maps? It's rarely full and only 24 slots, and performance there seems to be dodgy.

Why not Teufort? Well, this is why:
338

Why not Egypt or Turbine? While fun, the teams seem to often get stacked and spamming is key...on Egypt, demo spam. On Turbine, sentry spam in mid. Every time I go in there, 5-6 engis on the dominant team just control the mid with spread out sentry guns that no amount of ubers or spies can simultaneously conquer.

Squidward, go into your profile options and under "About me" there's an option for division tags. :)

So you base where you play on how high of an arbitrary number on a stat tracking site is? That makes me sad :crying:

I joined eGO because we have a 24/7 Egypt map, but I fell in love with Mesa.

However. I HATE 2fort. I never liked the map, it's outrageously repetitive. I can't stand insta-respawn servers, there never seems any point to killing any one. I've always thought that 2for was WAY too small a map for the player count that people normally run it with. And it always seems to be either one gigantic stalemate, or one team steamrolling the other until a scramble, at which point it becomes another stalemate. fajsfhlkasjfhd

/rant.

just wanted to remind everyone that mesa is as close to instant respawn
as you can get with out forcing it via server side (the map overides the spawn timer)

Hmph, it seems most of you mesa'ers are in it for the points, but what happened to having fun?

EDIT: and we also have tons of pubs on 2fort that aren't in eGO but play our 2fort server so much they have some nice ranks, like namely everyone in `cBs.
