So today, when recording some hl2 demos, I forgot the type .avi after the name, and they all saved as the default .dem. Is there a way for me to convert these, or do I have to "re-record" them with Camtasia?

I believe you cannot covert dem files. You can always start the demo and record that demo using FRAPS.

If you're going to record the demo using FRAPS, why not just record the game with FRAPS?

Use virtual dub.
But you have to make it into .tga's first.
You can look up how to use the source recorder.

Is FRAPS free? And virtual dub? I'm confused. :P

Thanks Ph?bus, I now have virtual dub and I believe I am ready to go.

You have to convert the .dem into .tga's first, then you take the first .tga and drag that into Virtual Dub.

Um. LOL I fail at this. How do I do that part?

Go into the Console
Type in "startmovie [name]"
then "playdemo [name]"
It will then record the demo into .tga files.
After it has gone past the part you wanted to record,
type "endmovie" in the console.

this artile best explains the process
http://tf2wiki.net/wiki/Help:Recording_demos

it was made for tf2 but it works exactly the same for every source game.

Great info, adding on:

Startmovie <filename> [avi/raw] Starts recording movie frames, stored in your game folder (..\Steam\SteamApps\<username>\team fortress 2\tf\) as .tga files.
A recent feature to HL2 is the ability to record directly to AVI (PC version) by specifying avi as a paremeter. When this parameter is used a windows codec dialogue box will be shown for you to select the codec so it is best to set TF2 to windowed mode before doing this. Example: Startmovie mymovie avi will record a mymovie.avi to your game folder

I just pulled that from the link that Passerby posted. So yes, you can record to .avi directly from source games.

you can go right to a video but you got to make sure you got a good codec to use and this feature is still a bit glitch which is why i dump to tga and a wav and put it back to together in a video editor

Erm, no...
instead of typing in startmovie [name]
just type in startmovie [name] avi
and with that you dont have to convert anything, it records it and places it in your game folder in avi format

but you need to make sure you got the right codecs and set which one too

since avi is a container not a formate
