I'm getting owned

What race? For any: watch replays, refine your build order in the first 30 supply of whichever race you play and practice, practice, practice. Learn command shortcuts, assign hotkeys and gain familiarity with your units, abilities, structures and timing. If you're using your mouse to select unit abilities or build units within structures you are doing it wrong and your game could be MUCH faster

scout scout scout
then when u think youve scouted enough
SCOUT AGAIN HERPHERP
then counter what the enemy is getting
if u needs HALP press f12 (nojoke >.>)
then click on what the enemy race is
and click on what unit theyre working towards
itll tell u its weaknesses

or play with some people that know how to play and go from there bud :P

like ron said i use mouse but i got a few shortcuts to build while i am attacking so i can do both and take less time. and able to continue attacking :) keep the pressure on bro :)

You get through all your 1v1 placement matches? Done tutorial? The game has like a 90 degree learning curve, it's not easy. You just need to practice, and keep playing matches, or you'll just be in a perpetual state of bad.

Need to learn some starting build orders for your race http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Main_Page will help with that. Start getting down basic mechanics, and knowledge of the game. Keep building workers, scout, etc.

Once you pick a standard build order, just do it over and over till its ground until your brain, then you can start reacting more to what you scout and how to change the build.

After your placement matches you should be in a league where you'll win/lose 50/50, if you win more you get promoted. So, you shouldn't be getting stomped insanely hard, unless you haven't finished placement.

What race are you playing?

RUSH RUSH RUSH!!! RUSH THEM! lol It's what I did...
Your not going to develop good mechanics just rushing all-in every game. You need to focus on a build and go for longer games. Need to have experience in late mid game and late game. Having 3+ bases up, and everything that comes with it like teching, macroing up large armies off multiple bases, upgrading, microing with drops/splitting battles to break a contain, microing your large army, it just gets really intense later in the game you go, and a lot more fun. You just need to be able to play it. You can't cheese your way to diamond.

Play Co-OP against AI, it tends to be very slow at the lower difficulties but you get some good tips from other players.

Also, having 3 people do a full zergling rush after 50 minutes of resource gathering is awesome

ive done rush hundreds of times
played zerg, hated it
Protoss is a pain but fun
Terran is actually fun because i don't have to sacrifice gatherers

ive dont the divide n conquer, built up two seperate forces, attacked from one side and moved my other forces to the reverse side to take out the buildings.

ive done the Ray rush, where i build up like 20 rays and rush

ive zerg rushed and failed....horribly

icanhaz replay of zerg rushz?

I'm a terran fan, so is it very necessary build a barrack to block entry point? Is scouting necessary too? I've been training with AI for the past 3 days but still havent come up with a nice strategy. :|

Sometimes i even got owned by Easy Zerg Level! T_T

Yes, scouting is 100% necessary so you can see where your opponent is on 4 player maps what he is doing so you can react. Walling off is also critical, they can get units into your base and gg you before you have units up if you don't have a wall. AI doesn't rush like that so it might not matter against them as much.

Use wiki.teamliquid.net for terran strats, start with 3 raxx.

As Cut said Scouting is important as well as the wall off but you need to know when to wall off. Walling off against another Terran isnt always a good idea. The idea behind a wall is that you are able to shoot melee attackers while they have to break down your wall. Against T's where there rush will be people shooting at your wall. All your wall does is delay them getting in while they proceed to kill what ever you have in the way. Putting you at a disadvantage if you manage to push back the attack.

Yeah, it's really not fun if you don't wall off. 6 Zerglings run into your base, you have no units, they start destroying all your SCVs, which in the early game each one matters. Then you lose, or your a major disadvantage the whole game.

ouch, that hurts. T_T

that happened to me like... out of 10 games with zerg... 10 times... T_T

On that website, im not so familer with the terms used... like.. 3 raxx? is that barracks?

Yes, the number on the build order is your supply count. Another tip, keep making workers. Anytime you can fit them in, through the whole game.

SC2's hard. Like, I practice and learn a lot of strats but I just can't seem to win. I do good usually though. Honestly I recommend this. Watch the entire series. You will learn A LOT!

Your just lucky you didn't start off playing brood war, if sc2 has a learning curve brood war was a wall. Can only select 12 units at a time, can only select 1 building at a time, can't rally workers so you have to manually move them to the mineral patch. No smart-casting, so all your casters you selected cast all at the same time. We all learned that when we started playing when we were like 12 :/

So yeah, just keep playing.. The game probably has the second steepest learning curve in games next to broodwar, it's even worse that most of us have been playing brood war for 12 years, so we already have a upper hand on people buying sc2.

At least we now have a match making system that puts you against people of your skill, brood war you had to create a game and hope to god the person wasn't lying about his skill level.

You can also learn quite a lot by watching pro players play. The best way to do this is find battlecasts on youtube.

HDStarcraft and Huskystarcraft are amazing places to start. Find their channels and just start watching games. The commentary is good and you'll learn a decent amount of stuff just ingesting what the pros do.

Scouting is absolutely essential and can make the difference between a loss and a win. On top of this, knowing how and when to harass as well as when to expand is also key.

Usually the safest time to grab an expansion is when you're doing an assault or putting harass on an enemy. They'll be too distracted to think about harassing themselves, and if you keep up with your macro (that is, your capacity to create and build things in your base) even if your assault loses, you'll have a sizable force ready to defend any expansion.

You have to try and contain your enemy. Make everything hard for them. They're getting an expansion? Punish them for it. Destroy their workers. Assault it. Make sure you have them on their toes every minute of the game, and not the opposite way.

Also make sure you have eyes all over the map. You never want to be caught off guard by a drop or a nydus worm. If you're Terran, spread your supply depots out around the corners of your base (but make sure you can defend them mid game vs air). If you're Protoss, try and do the same with Pylons. If you're Zerg, you have the best scout in the game--the Overlord.

If you know when an enemy is moving and what their composition is, you'll be readily prepared to handle it when it enters your base.

On top of all of this, get used to using control groups. That is, hotkeying your structures and army with ctrl+1 ctrl+2 and so on and so forth. Selecting a group of barracks to replenish your forces whilst in the middle of a battle can make all the difference when you have to push with reinforcements.

There are many more tricks of the trade to learn, but those are the simplest. Map control. Containment. Knowledge of your opponent.

Play and play and play some more. And then watch replays. Watch a LOT of replays. You can never learn enough.

That's all I can really say.

Husky/HD are more for entertainment, but you can still learn a lot if you watch the production tab/supply numbers.

Day[9]s cast is all focused on improving your game, and I prefer him for learning about the game. He streams live on teamliquid, and has an archive on www.day9tv.blip.tv

Didn't play beta till phase 2, but was watching his casts and was in diamond the whole time. Then again, it helps that I played brood war.

I'm only gold atm because I played some of games as zerg (trying them out) on launch after playing all protoss in diamond in phase 2. Started playing protoss again like 80% way through my 1v1 games, and haven't been able to play more 1v1s and just go to diamond because I've been playing 2v2s with my friend that just got into sc2, played a ton of 2s games :/. Every time I get on, he wants to play, lol. It's fun playing with him, but he's new so were stuck in gold 2v2 till his mechanics get better. It's nice because I can scout for him and tell him what he should do over vent.

Also, adding to the brood war thing. A ton of tricks were found as the game developed, like muta stacking, mine drags, worker drill, vulture patrol micro etc and that made it really hard for new players to jump into the game since they didn't know any of them. But, that's what makes starcraft a deep game is being able to exploit and micro a unit so it fulfills a different role than designed. Some of that is already coming out in sc2, so just stay on top of them by reading teamliquid. Some examples would be magic boxes and keeping mutas spread to DESTROY thors, so the mutas take 0 splash damage. -- http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=145719
