I'm not as old as you, But butcher I had to turn the tv channel with a pair of vice grips because the knob broke off. So we usually just watched the same channel all night. Then again we only had 4 channels to watch.

I can relate to all that.
IBM 360 was the first computer I worked on. We submitted programs on punch cards and waited a whole day to get a printout back.
I do know Cobol but never put it on my resume. My teacher in college graded our programs on how many times it compiled before it work. If it took only 1 run, you got an A, 2 runs B+. We used to create the deck, take the punch cards back to our room and carefully look over each card. Then submit and pray you did not spell something wrong or put it in the wrong column. I hated the class so much I never put it down on my resume.
Do you remember 300 Baud modems? You could watch each character get drawn on the screen.

P.S. Last count I was up to over 30 programming languages, many don't even show up on my resume. I had forgotten Ada and even used one called Forth.
 
I reacon that I qualify as a member of this "club". I am 57 years old, served 8 years in the USMC, and did 2 tours in 'Nam. Never used a computer till 10 years agw and still type with two fingers. My hair is long ( that is what is left is!) and my beard is more grey than anything else.
My first computer was a Cannon, they built them for 2 years, then got out of the bussiness!
I have 3 sons (23,21,and 9) that all play DOD. And my Loving Wife of 23 years is STILL the best looking gal I have ever seen! The avatar is from my Dads Air Force unit during the Korean War. They were known as "The Devils Own Grim Reapers".

My first car was a 68 Chevy BelAir. It had a steel i-beam in front of the radiator. Everyone got out of my way when I wanted to merge onto a highway. Just about took the whole front off of a Pinto once when it turned in front of me (Good thing I missed the rear end where the gas tank was located!)

Hangman, I never served but had sereral members from my old clan go off to Iraq. Also, my wife's dad was one of the 2 infantry units that created the break in the Nazi lines to get everyone off the beach at Normandy. He never talked about it but I have an article that describes it.
 
yeah them belairs the big old boats. v8 but who cared about gas it was cheap unlike today i pay 319 a gallon. gas companies are killing us. and dont even try to change your spark plugs in these new cars it takes a rocket scientist just to find them. what kind of music do you guys like? i like classic rock, the stones, zepplin, bad company, that was some good music. this new crap the kids are listening to is just noise. you remember going to the concerts and they'd be passing around ??????. festival seating no metal detectores everyone holding your lighters high. now you cant even smoke a cigarette. standing in the middle of the floor with your girl on your shoulders. those were good concerts. those days are gone. i guess it will never be the same. the kids today dont know what they are missing out on.

49 years old in March so I guess I'm in 8) My first car was a 66 Ford Mustang, bought it for $ 500.00. Wish I had it back now. Gas was .52 cents a gallon, you could drive all month long,,,,,,, and have enough to go to McDonald's and buy a cheeseburger, fries, and a coke for .99 cents. Remember those days. I actually worked at the McDonalds in Santa Barbara Ca where the egg Mc Muffin was invented, while I was working there !. The owners son, last name was "Peterson" invented it. 13 channel black and white tv's, broken knobs, again turned with vise grips, rabbit ears on top. Replacing the burnt out tubes at "Thrifty's". I had one of the original rubber "Bud Man" dolls LOL. Bell bottom pant, floral design shirts with open collers in high school, puca shell necklaces, thick leather watch bands,,,,,,,,,,,,,, do I qualify ?????? 8)

Ummm, the "Senior eGO" on the roster means ppl that used to be Clan Advisors. There are all sorts of ages there.

I guess I would qualify, too. I'm 51 and have been working with computers for 30 years.
Got a degree in Computer Science in the 70s. Went to work for Digital Equipment Corp (DEC)
right out of college as a Field Service Engineer for 14 years. Had a company car, an oscilloscope, and a suitcase full of tools. Worked on DEC10, Vax, PDP11 & PDP8 computer systems / networks, plus Apple & IBM PCs. Worked at a lot of interesting places. Nuclear power plants, military bases, banks, insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, etc.
One of the most interesting places I worked at was General Electric – Space Systems Division. They made satellites, missles, etc. I saw many satellites they were working on, very cool!! They had a lot of large environmental testing chambers to subject the satellites to extremes of temperature, humidity/dryness and vibration. Some of the areas were Top Secret and they would put me in a plywood box on wheels and roll me through those areas in the box so I couldn’t see anything! lol At the military bases I worked on computers controlling jet simulators, etc. Some of the computers were in aircraft. One base had a centrifuge they had used to subject pilots to g-forces.
I worked on a lot of peripherals, too. Big disk drives the size of washing machines, those magtape drives with the big reels of magnetic tape and line printers that would print out reams of paper a minute.
In the eighties, before the World Wide Web came out, I used to dial out using a VT100 dumb terminal and get on the Usegroups.
I can definitely relate to the punch cards in college. I can remember having one command wrong on a punch card and it generated 100s of errors when it tried to compile it.
In the 90s I worked at Intel, then went to Motorola, and now am back at Intel running a special projects computer lab right next to where they make the dualcore and quadcore Pentiums.
My first home computer was a Franklin Ace 1200. That was a Apple ][+ clone with 64k of memory, a 133k floppy drive and a monochrome amber monitor. I remember dialing out to BBSes with it using a 300 baud modem and downloading software late at night. Since the Pentiums have come out I’ve custom-built all the computers I’ve had over the years.
Back in the day I had no idea that I would eventually have a home computer that’s 1000s of times more powerful than some of the mainframe computers I was working on then!
Music? I like pretty much everything but Rap, Opera and Country. Listen mostly to Rock.
 
Well im not as old as grampa butcher but i have a 77 chrysler cordoba with a 1968 440 engine and the 8 track still works.im 44

I love the idea of an old farts club. ;-) I think you know pretty much everything about me because we play Kalt all the time. Just in case we didn't cover everything: Married 3 kids, (boy-21, girl-12 and The White Knight ~ 13) I'm retired, wife works part-time as a nurse. Best thing about playing in Kalt is killing "me the Butcher", and getting blown-up by John 14:6 :-) CYA IN THE SEWERS - Oh and be ready!
 
I,m like John. Too old and too young to fit in. I do like to hunt and fish though and that kind of makes me old. I'm married with two girls and that definitely makes me old.

Butch, don't worry about the promotion mixup. I'm just happy to be playing.

Yup, on my Atari 800 XL computer I used a 300 Baud, and later 1200 Baud modem. At work there was a 2400 Baud Bell modem we used for backup purposes.

Ah the good old days, thank God technology flew like the wind. I still have the Atari computers in boxes in the basement. Now all the old games from Atari, Commodore, etc. are all available as disk images that one can load on their Wintel machines using emulation software.

When I was working a consulting gig away from home, I was in a hotel for 3 months. I'd brought a CD full of Atari games and had fun playing them on a laptop. Some were text (Zork, etc.), others were arcade games such as Lode Runner, Montezuma's Revenge, Archon, Lode Runner, etc. It helped pass the time and was fun.

The emulator I use is Xformer:
