Take it from someone who's had this discussion before, there are two sides, and though I belong to one of them, let me accurately describe them for you:

1.) The scipt kiddy fanboys who write their scripts and swear - whether or not they believe it or it is true, all of which vary with the script - that the scripts are legit and not cheating.

2.) The purists who swear that anything other than WASD and a mouse is a godforsaken abomination to twitch gaming.

Don't bother trying to make those two sides agree. All you need to know is whether or not the people in charge of enforcing the rules think this is against said rules or not. That said, this is probably best suited for a PM to an advisor or DL. I thought I'd get this post in before the flaming starts.

In my mind, scripts are an intended game mechanic (Valve could remove the ability to script if they so chose, but they leave it), so as long as its not a script that exploits an unintended game mechanic its fine. But TBH our rules really aren't that clear about what is and what isn't a 'cheat' script.

I have a couple scripts, but mostly they just modify my control scheme, not actually do anything for me.

1. I have a script making it so Q switches between my primary and secondary weapon, not just doing 'Previous Weapon'
2. If I press and hold Middle Mouse Button it pulls out melee and attacks with it, when I release Mouse 3 it stops attacking with it and goes back to my previous weapon.

I also have a few scripts for working with bots and recording, and one or two for rocket jumping. But I don't use those on normal servers so its ok.

I dont believe that scripts are cheating, I have seen a lot of diff scripts that people use: soldier rocket jump, quick disguise, 360 demoman targe turning ability ect. I dont use any of them, I prefer binds and with my razor naga mouse I can have a ton of binds for diff things on my mouse and with my G110 keyboard I can have a lot more binds. Also the rapid fire stickies is allowed from what I remember, unless leadership changed their mind on that.

Yeah, I don't use scripts, but like frisky, I have a mouse with a few extra buttons. I use all of them. M1 and M2 retain their usual uses, but M4 and M5 are custom, instantly switching to weapon 2 and 3, respectively. I use M5 all the time... usually, I set up my Q quickswap at the beginning of the life to be between primary and secondary, and then if I need melee, I just hit the little button under my thumb and magic happens.

But, as far as gaming ethics go, It really does depend on the script you're using. 360 degree targe turns, for instance, or any variant of it, can't really be done without scripts, and as such, it probably isn't a good thing. Rocket jumping, on the other hand, is something easily done (And I would suggest MORE easily done) without scripts, and so to automate that probably isn't terrible.

Well, the charge turn can be done without scripts, but with either a Novint Falcon or a really high sensitivity. But you cannot turn as much as you used to be able to since VALVe placed the cap on turning rate while charging.

Other than that, I agree with Dread, its much better and much easier to rocket jump normally, it gives you much more control and you can do many more things.

You guys have no love for the pure gaming essence of blowing people to pieces with a simple M1 click and not a W+9+M3+M5+6+M19 combo. Although I like that one. It seems fitting for chainstabs.

LOL, Im so glad that this game has binds and love the way my mouse is set up, it makes a lot of things easier and allows my left hand to concentrate on other things besides the number keys which my right hand now does on the number pad on my mouse.

To my knowledge, scripting is allowed on eGO servers, because ANY user with the proper knowledge can implement and play with them. Let's be realistic, everyone can find those binds and type them in. Now I was gone for a bit so things might have changed but honestly I wouldn't worry about it.

Yeah, scripting is extremely simple. It's not like your coding something no one else could figure out.

Sorry Khaotic, we decided while you were gone that scripting is fine for every player...except you!!! Muahaha!!!!

My personal opinion is that scripting is for lazy players who aren't any good. Scripting turns the game into WoW and eliminates any kind of skill it takes to actually be good.

Take that how you want it.

So true. I know this is true because I use scripts and I'm super lazy. Activating uber and auto saying in team chat DEPLOYING UBER is super lazy. I should man up and stop my actions for a second purposefully exposing myself to death to avoid being lazy. It's not like I want my team to know they have and uber going out, especially when I can't always voice talk to them.

Did you guys miss the whole "Stow your opinions" post I made at the start of this thread? Seriously, posts like that are just asking for trouble, and putting an otherwise constructive (or at least not harmful) thread on a one-way train to Locksville.

Look at it this way, when you make very opinionated, downright rude comments, 1 of 3 people will read them:

Person 1: Agrees with you, and will usually further the whole "I'm better than you because I'm not lazy/cheating/whatever" attitude.
Person 2: Disagrees with you, and will get defensive, and you will have a pointless argument on your hands.
Person 3: Doesn't care, and probably doesn't want to hear your opinionated drivel.

Trust me, I've gotten in trouble for silly arguments like this. Take it from someone who's been there, none of those 3 people really care what you think, only you care about flaunting your opinion. It's not worth a flame war, we're above that kind of behavior here. Or at least I'd like to think so.

We don't mind threads about the mechanics of scripting; "how do I do this action" discussions. However, as S3rv0 pointed out, threads about scripting in general usually tend to devolve into flame wars.

Since it looks like we are already there, I'm going to consider this thread complete :)

Post away, constructively please, in the original thread. I did.
