Recently, I cane across the trailer for the movie "The social network", the story of the guy who made facebook.


Now first, watch the trailer before you continue reading.

Now in it, there is the part of bringing the social experience online. I took a moment to think about this, and realized how dependent people become on it.
In my school, every kid has a facebook. Meeting up? You decide that over facebook. Lost your homework? Facebook. Need a chat? Facebook.

I feel as though people become dependent on this service, and no longer even consider true social interaction like calling or going to peoples houses to gather friends.

I do notice some dependancy, but thats how people get together now, before it was phones, and before that like you said, you went to their house. And now since nearly everyone has one, why not make plans on it when you know they are going to check it? I dont think the social part of it isnt so bad, its the games on it now trying to become like retail games that annoys me most of all.....wooo you have a farm that has 3 cows and 12 pigs....
 
I don't have a facebook or phone but I can relate. "Hey Cyan gimme your number so we can get eachother's facebook so we start a party." "Uhh John I don't have a Facebook or phone. What now?" "Nevermind."

It gets very annoying, but nonetheless, I still manage to survive without them.
 
I agree. Though. I though this facebook movie would be bad... but by the trailer, it seems pretty interesting
 
I do have both, a facebook and a phone. I think we limit our speech through texting and facebook. Words ain't the same as a pixelated letter. Whenever I get a text, I call back.

It also doesn't allow you to show emotion.

I show emotion through the interwebz. I'm doing it now. If you can't see it you just don't have manbearpig senses. And who's that in your avatar, for the life of me I cannot get over her awesome hair. I personally think Facebook and phones are great tools but people abuse them(i.e. prank calls, fake death notes, etc.) It just makes me wanna curl up into a ball and erode. That's right. Erode. Not explode. Erode. Into the ground.
 
nowadays, at college people are all like "You don't have a facebook?! THIS IS SHOCKING!" if you admit to not having one.
 
Everyone I know has both Facebook, and a phone.
I prefer using the phone, not that into Facebook. But still. I feel dependency. A lot.
 
Well the movie is less about Facebook and more about how big of an A-hole Zuckerberg was or became.

As for facebook in general, I use it mostly to connect with friends and family who are in other states or in other countries. For friends and people that are close to home, I just use my phone. Frankly I don't think that speech is curtailed though either facebook or texting. As long as intent get through then they work just fine.

Never had a facebook, never will. No need for it, don't need to add 500 people that I will never talk to to show off pictures.

I have other means of contact with my real friends.. Facebook will die eventually when the next best thing comes around.
 
It is just the new Myspace. I don't use my facebook at all. Don't really find it necessary to have either.
 
First off i bet Tom is pretty pissed off he didnt get a movie deal for myspace.

Second i think facebook doesn't ruin the "true Social interaction".

When cell phones came out, or txting, or email, people said those ruined socializing, and its not really socializing, every technological form of communication has been criticized for ruining social experiences.. Theres no such thing as a "True social interaction", because no matter how you do it, its still socializing.

also i love facebook and i go on it for hours every day :P
 
I still don't care about this movie or Facebook. My Facebook is just there for special promotion things for games. To ensure that, I use a secondary email and pseudonym for it. Yeah.
Though that parody on the last page was pretty funny.

In response to the other main topic, most people in my school use texting or actually talk in person instead of Facebook for most things. I wonder if the whole Facebook dependency thing is a bit exaggerated, or if my area is special.

The closest I come to social networking is Last.fm (in sig) I really don't like others like Facebook and MySpace.

A lot of people who use it (not everyone) develop a sense of self importance and the need to announce everything to everyone because everyone wants to know what they had for breakfast that day. I think it's a little much, but that's just me.
 
Despite the fact that i visit facebook daily, i dislike it. People use it inappropriately. I do want to see this movie though, it looks worthwhile
