a few days ago i was a ticking lag bomb ingame and my computers
ram threatened to blow its brains out due to the high usage of system memory. my system memory would often go as high as 2134/2543 making my computer run extremely slow when hl2.exe was running and at the same time avg ran scan/update which takes up quite abit mem. anyways so i started to experiment a bit with the video settings.. heres what i did...

i set

model detail: Low
texture detail: Low
shader detail: Low
Water detail: Simple reflections
Shadow detail: Low
color correction: disable
antialising mode: Low
filtering mode: Trilinear
wait for vertical sync: disable
motion blur: Disable
multicore rendering: disable
high dynamic range: Bloom(if available)

i also set aspect ratio to widescreen and resolution to 800x480

to decrease the system memory usage of hl2.exe im using taskmanager to set the priority on steam.exe ,hl2.exe and gameoverlay to low

i dont know it it makes any difference but as launch opions ive set
-windowed -heapsize 262144

after i set all those options up my Day of Defeat has been running smooth as a clock and my ping rarely goes over 80 :)

i just thought i should share this info to other people who has lag/system memory problems when running steam/steam games ;)

This is good for people with low end pc's. Good job.

Also, in launch options:

-windowed -heapsize 262144

The heapsize may difer for some people depending on how much RAM they have available.

i think i also should add that when your using heapsize, its reccomended to use half of the ammount of ram you have. if you use more than half that might fry your ram

Basically just put your settings on lowest. I never heard of this heapsize before..

I think Heapsize just tells the program to use this amount of ram. Which people usually recommend using half of your RAM, so the game would run much more smoothly. (If that makes any sense)

Exactly. Standard game uses about 1/8 of your ram, settings heapsize to half of your ram it will make your fps boost about 10-20FPS.

also if you use net_graph 1 in console you dont have to press tab everytime you want to check
your ping, you then get some text in one of the corners of the game window where you can see your ping, choke etc :P

I haven't used 800x480 resolution since the original C&C on a Pentium III. What kind of computer are you using?
