I was trying to join the server today when this happened...

Valve is doing an update - unfortunately, most everyone's client got updated before the servers did. Folks will get the server patched. Nothing wrong on your end.

This happens when Valve updates the game files; after which the servers have to be manually updated, which takes a while.

Just wait it out
