When I was playing insurgency, I was trying to snipe with an aimpoint (lol) and I saw an enemy very far away to my right, so I turned and i couldn't see him anymore. I did some testing and apparently theres less fog around the edges, so to see a bit further, point the left or right of ur screen at the spot. It's very useful because you can then predict where the person is and score a long range kill.

As far as i know, its not engine based, but i think the fog is set depending on map.

It is cause when I make maps I "never" add that fog I hate it, I think it takes away from the realism that a sniper can only see as far as the M4. :)

Yeah, the developers spoke about this often. Basically, from what I remember is that the fog is cube-shaped rather than spherical (as it should be) So you see the "corners" of the cube which are further than the "face." So your peripheral vision is actually further than when you are looking at your target/object straight-on.

This works in many games... America's Army, other Source engine games, etc. It might be a characteristic of DirectX rendering?

Yea this is a little secret, once you play long enough you find out how to use this to your advantage! This can be used very well as an insurgent on sinjar in the bunkers looking down on marines coming up the hill.

Exactly

Exactly! Also, you can see an outline of an insurgent with the naked eye, but with a scope it's obscured. I was trying to remember which map that happens on....Thanks Jason...

I actually find that I can see better as an insurgent looking down on Marine spawn from the pillboxes on the hill in Sinjar. I can't even see the pillboxes as a Marine.

One might want to try the different settings of the graphics option "Dynamic high range" (or something along the lines...).
It affects how the fog is rendered, and thus one's view distance.

FWIW the fog situation improved greatly for me when I changed my resolution from 1024x760 to 1280x1024...
