Internet Speeds lower then what they are capable of.

Well lately My internet speeds have been alot lower then what they are capable of, Its not so bad on either of my computers, But enough to be noticable. But the Korean Person that Is staying with me says they are only getting about 50 Kb/s Downloads, my ISP claims speeds up to 5 MB/s
and i was doing an internet test and got about 900 kb/s but 2 months ago I did it and got about double that, and I have noticed it start to slow down, So if you can help me I would appreciate it. Also, If you need more Info let me know.

His computer is pretty new (Less then 2 years old) With recent upgrades (Not sure what). But I have Cable internet.

First, power cycle your modem (unplug, replug in power cable). That will restart it and have it redo the connection dialog.

Also, the key phrase in your post was "claiming speed UP TO" its the up to part that is key. The way cable internet works is that the internet from the head end comes down the telephone poles to your neighborhood.

Everyone in your neighborhood is on on the same node. There are anyplace between 10 and say 200 houses on every node. What the cable company does is they say ok, we are getting 50MBps from timewarner cable or whoever they buy their internet from. Then they split it up so that each node gets say 15Mbps bandwidth - but each of the 200 houses gets upto 5Mbps. As you can see, it only takes a couple of houses to be downloading pron for everyone on the street to have slow internet.

This is why the internet is slow durring times like noon, and 6 o clock (people on break and after work). The times vary and are not important. The point is that if peopole on your street are using at the same time it gets slower.


On the otherhand, if you call the cable company they will tell you to do a power cycle and have you check all kinds of things such as pluggin your computer directly into your modem without a router (sometimes routers mess up and cause slowdowns). But every once in a while it will be somehting on their end or your modem begging to fail.

They can test from their end if you modem is recieving good signal, and all kinds of interesting numbers which are hard to explain (some i dont know) and all of which they will never tell you - even if it says your modem is marginal they will tell you on the phone that its fine. But, my friends works for the cable company and if the numbers arent perfect at their own house they tweak them.

Yah, I'll try all that stuff, and not too many people on my street have the same internet company as me, most go with TELUS, and there is some elderly people on my street, So I hope to god there not home all day downloading pron, But thanks for your help and I hope it works.

The other thing I am really concerned about is the Korean Person staying with me says that they watch videos like youtube and all that, but that it will stop every 5 seconds and then start up again in 10 seconds.

Spyware/adware/viruses can slow internet down
always scan to make sure even if you think you don't have any

let me rephrase: your node will have liek 200 houses on it, weather it be your street, or every street in your town.

Also, most times spyware doesnt slow your internet down it slows your computer down.

The task manager will tell you how much bandwidth is being used on your network card and you can compare that with your apps, and type 'netstat' into console to see all internet connections.
