well i just installed my GeForce 8600GTS 512MB and I checked the nTune monitor and it says its running about 68 C. Is this normal for Idle?

That is ungodly high.
Ive got an 8800GTX and I idle at about 40-45c
Max at 59c when on full load.
I suggest downloading RivaTuner, from there you can access your card and program the fan setting speed manually. I believe stock is about 25% fan speed?
This will drastically decrease the temp of your card and doesn't put harmfull stress on it either.

that may help. just Google temperatures for the 8600GTS and you should find alot of temps that people get and the "standard" temperatures you should be getting.
How is the airflow in your case?

well the side plate has all holes so i put that side facing out so air could get in. but my computer is underneath my desk so not a lot of air actually is circulating. i got 1 case fan and the fan that the card came with

well i went into nTune and raised the GPU Fan to 100% and it has decreased the temperature to about 61C, and thats the lowest i can get it while not gaming
i think the problem is air circulating. you should have two fans. one in the front and one in the back (well you dont NEED this) but it is highly recommended. I would like to bet 90% of heating problems are because poor air circulation and the other 10% is from not putting on good thermal compounds.
But yea I would try and see what else you could do, but maybe look into a new case?

well seeing as i don't have any extra computer fans i just have my regular big blox fan blowing air directly into the side of my computer. and its down to like 53C

buy some extra case fans they're like $7 - 10 each or less or more
buy at least 2 one to help suck more air in and the other to suck it out

Ahh, there is a problem. Let your computer breath a little
I have 5 120mm fans....and that doesn't include the 2 on the PSU, 1 on GPU, and 1 120mm heatsink
And I add that one of the 120mm fans is maybe 1/2" away from my card.

lol i got the whole side open now w/ the big box fan still going on high. about 51*C idle and like 58*C while playing dod:s

Thanks for the information Epic, I always wondered if my card was running too hot. Thanks to you I know its normal (If I have the extra fans cooling it down).

By the way - never be as stupid as I used to be. I bought an XaviorIII case which comes with 7 case fans - plus the 2 fans on my video card, the processor fan, and the multiple fans on the many hard drive coolers. (no, none of that is stupid, i'm getting to it)
And then decide without actually ever having used them, that you are going to replace all of your 7 case fans with Tornados.
ZOMG talk about the loudest case in the history of computers. I ended up only useing 4 of the tornadoes, and had them on fan controllers so they were on low all the time only on high durring benchmarks.
FYI even on low, its the loudest computer I have ever seen comparing to other computers on high.
That was my last computer, it had the very first FX-51 processors aka socket 940.
Learn from your several mistakes, that's what I always say.
