The Mann-Conomy Update

9. Valve finally implements their true goal all along, cash for items. I uninstall my game and regain about four gigabytes of harddrive space for something other then a virtual hat collector.

I could comment that the hats are a sideshow that you never HAVE to collect, but I'm more caught off guard by how your install file is about half the hard drive space of mine :P

the polycount pack is at -63%
it's base price is $101 USD

More like MACRO-transactions amirite?
never planned on buying in the first place

However large it was, it's nice to have it back. This new update is going to make the game unbearable for me anyway.

History of Valve's TF2 Changes that affected the community.

1. Initial class updates, new weapons unlocked by achievements. Some people whine about achievement servers, but most like this system.

2. The HERP DE DERP update. Random item drops. Random hats. Result? Idle idle idle.

3. Halocaust. Community is divided over the use of a program to idle while not in-game. A special item is created and given to everyone who "didn't cheat".

4. Limited edition medals. Rage ensues over the idea of limited items, but most don't care.

5. Bill's Hat. Defended by players, because it's not paying cash for an item, it's just a small bonus for those getting LFD2! No way Valve would be evil enough to create an actual market for items with real-life currency, right?

6. Sam and Max items. See above.

7. Golden Wrenches. 100 available only. Thanks to this being possibly the worst idea ever, and also having the drop times leak and getting several crafters banned, the engineer update has been forever marred with shame.

8. Polycount update announced. I look at the incoming bloat and nerfs and shake my head.

9. Valve finally implements their true goal all along, cash for items. I uninstall my game and regain about four gigabytes of harddrive space for something other then a virtual hat collector.

True story.

Its a game, and Valve has employees. Believe it or not those employees have to eat and pay for their house too. Get over it, if you dont like that fact that they are selling items then dont buy them. You can still get the items by drop and craft anyways.

From steam forums:

1. I HAVE read the complete Mannconomy FAQ, I know everything and this is no unfounded speculation
2. Before you rate or flame, READ THROUGH to the end.
3. I will try to explain the issue here in layman's terms to you.

Understood? Okay, then let's begin.

There's right now a huge turmoil on the forums, confusion about whether you can only buy or find certain items - whenever anyone voices concerns about anything, they are quickly shut down with "OMG ITS ALL STILL FREE".

That is not the case in practice.

Why I say "in practice"?

If you look at it, you'll see that these set bonuses only count if you wear the respective hat of that set, too.

All of the hats are currently priced at 17,99€/$ (€ is even more, 25$).
And even months after this update, they'll still be at 5-10 bucks.

Before you jump up my throat yelling "OMG NOOB BUT THESE CAN BE FOUND INGAME FOR FREE!!!!!!11", take a moment and THINK about the realistic chances.

The chances to find a hat beforehand were about 3,5% every 4 hours and approx 20 minutes. That is abysmally low.
The chance to find one of the 5 new hats is even lower. We are talking about almost lottery-jackpot-low here. No one knows the exact numbers now, but the new drop system didn't improve that a lot.

"BUT TRAEDING!!" - do you HONESTLY believe that anyone in their right mind will trade you any of these 5 hats for anything else than another one of the 5 hats?

No.

These hats now have a very real value, a reallife money value. If you find a Grenadier's Softcap - congratulations, you just randomly found 18 bucks. Or the equivalent thereof.

I hope you're beginning to understand the problem here: There are SET BONUSES - with GAMEPLAY-CHANGING attributes. This means hats are no longer merely cosmetic.

You want the set-bonus? You will have to PAY. (or get insanely lucky, which can take months or YEARS.)

Realistically speaking, if you want one of the set bonuses (for example I'm loving the Pyro set one), but don't have the according hat, you can either shell out 18 bucks now or wait for years to find this specific hat.

This is the issue. Right there. They are withholding gameplay changing content from you unless you're willing to pay insane prices at their store.

We need to PROTEST this development NOW. Before it's too late.
The whole system would be fine, as long as spending reallife money really only granted you cosmetic effects, but that is currently not the case.

We need to get these hats removed from the set bonuses, it's an obvious money milking mechanic.

Now that you've read through it all you're free to rate and comment.

The game changing effects are not that OP. Like the sniper not being able to be headshotted, its easily countered with a good soldier. As I said before, Its just a game so get over it. If you don't like it you can gladly leave. They are only charging because the polycount weapons are community made. And they get part of the money made from their weapons. Its part of vavles way of rewarding them for winning the contest

Implying I haven't already uninstalled and left.

Not trying to imply that, I know you have already left. But the fact that you are going on such a rant and tyraid about how you dont feel Valve should charge for the items is a waste of time and is pointless. Its ultimately their game and they can do what they want with it weather one person likes it or not. I personally don't care. Yes the prices are super high IMO but do you see me complaining? There is always crafting to get me what I want, when I want it. End of story.

Out of curiosity, is it the price or the principle of the matter?

Because $18 for a hat is insane, but what if it was $5?

I definitely think this is a bad move in their pricing structure, but I won't quit TF2. I simply won't buy anything. I'm sure Valve can track who's playing vs. who's buying and playing, and I plan on enjoying the game the same as I am now. Shame this bothered you enough to uninstall the game, but that's absolutely your right.

I doubt Valve would go back on this now though, maybe drop the prices. I don't think those who are abandoning the game are going to be enough of a counterbalance to those who'll keep playing and those who pay for the new items.
