Cool didn't win because Zerg is UP or OP. Cool won because he's a god among men. He outplayed everyone. If you watched the streams his level of skill was far above anyone else's.

Just because he won doesn't mean zerg isn't UP. Cool is just on another level at the moment, his sense of timings and ability to not make one too many drones etc are just way above everyone else. His APM is also triple of what anyone normally can pull.

It shouldn't take a player of that caliber to be good with zerg, he can utilize them because of how fast he is. Also, ITR practiced to play zerg, not to play fruitseller and ended up making mistakes.

The better player won, not the race. Zerg still needs buffs.

Zerg does not need buffs. It needs better players who think differently. Cool thinks differently, and because of that and his skill, he's able to catch many people off their game.

Example: In that game, instead of trying to break ITR's wall, he took more bases, allowing him to make a larger army fairly quickly. Some zerg players try desperately to break it down such as baneling busting it or making roaches. Not a lot of zerg would think "Let me take 3 more bases to get some more resources while the terran turtles."

More tactics zerg needs to utilize is flanking and drops. Cool did both in that game like flanking with his ultras and dropping banelings over the marines. Zerg players are playing too much like terran, ie making an army and pushing up front. They need to think differently like multiple pronged attacks. That's why zerg has the ability to make a large army fairly quickly, to surround the opponent and get the most dps.

Teching up is a BIG thing too. ITR teched to thors and tanks quickly.
Tier 3 and 2.5 units.
Some zergs stick with the tier 1 and 2 for too long. zerglings, roaches and mutalisks.
Cool responded by MAKING ultras by the 15:30 minute mark which not a lot of zergs do by that time. And he also made 14 infestors which, as the casters said, complements the ultras nicely. Fast teching to counter terran very effectively.

Deception is also something he used with the Greater Spire, forcing ITR to make vikings as the casters said.

Zerg is all about the mid - late game.
When they have a good position like cool, they are an unstoppable force.
The early game is what throws zerg off their game.

And this is just basing off of that game. There are sooooooooo many different styles that zerg can use in sooooo many circumstances. I wish I could watch the rest of the sets >.> T.T

I don't really want to list out all the ones I've thought out cause this thread is about the awesomeness of Cool. Maybe I'll do something about that later.

Cool fightinggggggg

Sorry, I just get annoyed when so many people say zerg is UP, when zerg players haven't been utilizing their abilities to their fullest. xD

No. It is pretty blatant something is wrong, all of the top zerg players are saying it, even Cool said they were underpowered. Cool won because of ITR's mess ups and his skill level over ITR. Saying zerg need to do something "different" doesn't make any sense, yeah they have all this stuff but considering it takes like double the time to tech to tier 3 than terran just to beat their tier 1 really doesn't matter.

Zergs get rolled over early game, or weakened so much that they are put on the defensive the whole early game. There are so many openings and windows that terran can just end the game right there, it's not a matter of doing something different. Zergs opening is just staying alive and hoping to get your expansion up, if you drone a little too hard you get rolled over.

Zerg is underpowered, it's a fact. People have made the argument that people just don't know what they are doing, and it's wrong. Maybe it's fine to you in the lower brackets, but when you reach high diamond/that skill level it becomes blatantly obvious. Zerg have to hope their opponent makes a mistake to win, and put in way more effort than Terran. You can even look at all the winners of tournaments, wins of zergs in brackets and see this. This GSL is pretty much the only big tournament a zerg has won, and it's because he's insanely skilled. If he switched to terran he'd do the same thing but it would be even easier on him.

This. Terran has a huge advantage over zerg in the current state of things. (even though im the only terran who cant seem to beat them.:facewall:) Terran is just able to put far to much early game pressure on zerg. We have two of the best harassing units.(Reapers and Hellions) and a whole lot of other good units and a variety of different openings. Cool is just a baller and beat ITR. There is even a thread on team liquid about Cool wanting to switch to Terran for GSL 2. He probbaly cant now without getting boo'd but still.

ITR had few mess ups in that game. He had around the same amount of forces as anyone else would by that time. The only mistake he did (that I could see) was going after Cool's expansions, which allowed Cool to take out several small forces somewhat easily. But he did that because he made those expansions early instead of only having 2 bases like most zerg players do. Splitting ITR forces.

By doing something different, there's a lot to be considered. Such as the upgrades for burrow, or drops. If more zerg players incorporated that in their game they have a higher chance of winning. Terran does drops and it's very effective. Helion drops, marauder drops. Zerg does nothing and attacks the front. Remember nydus worm plays? Using that little tactic can change the game. The helion drops into mineral lines is huge for zerg. How about a baneling drop into a mineral line? Could be more effective than just trying to run zerglings in. Not just baneling drops but basically any unit drop.

Early game I agree with you. What ever happened to spine crawler defenses with transfusion from queens? That is something different from mainstream roach defence. Day9's dailys told us to experiment with different builds and defenses and ways to play. Zerg players aren't experimenting enough.
Remember when NOONE used infestors? Then someone incorporated that one unit into their army. Now zerg have a huge chance against bioball.

Terran players have people like TLO, who comes up with crazy builds.
Protoss have 4 gate. (But also Noni who started to incorporate phoenixes into his builds).
Zerg have people like Idra. With a few exceptions like Cool.

I have a friend, a genius zerg player. Diamond 20. Comes up with crazy things and mostly wins. Follows standard play and mostly loses.

Yeah, get to the point where you can throw down a nydus worm and your probably already winning. Throwing money at a cute tactic like burrow isn't going to change the game, since it takes time to upgrade, wasting way more money on it than terran and delays your hive tech. By then he's just going to 1a through your army. Upgrade overlord drop for a ton of minerals resources drop in and do damage, then the terran just lifts and base trades.

Zerg can't get to use those upgrades, they aren't going to change the game. Also, nydus? Yeah that works well, pull 4 SCVs and they'll kill the worm, and there goes wasted minerals. Even if you get it up your units come out 1 by 1 while they just snipe your guys in a line.

These innovative tactics are just cute things to play around with, and aren't going to change your game. If anything, messing around with them might make you lose by delaying other more important stuff. Experimenting is good, yes, but there is already obvious things that are hindering the zerg compared to the other 2 races. There isn't going to be suddenly some amazing build that crushes terran, it's the fundamentals that are the problem, and we don't need to experiment to see that. Zergs would be able to experiment if they were contained in their base the whole early game. As zergs experiment so will terran, and it's easier for terran to experiment because of the free range they have over zerg.

Burrow is only a cute tactic? It makes terrans scan and make ravens. Wasting resources for terran if you snipe out the raven.
I don't think you tech to hive immediately after your lair finishes. Burrow costs 100/100 which is like the same for speed. Yet burrow can set up baneling mines, roach movement underground, burrowed infestors.
Overlord drops are just a NEW way of thinking. Sure it might not be effective until someone thinks differently on how to use them. I'm not saying RUSH DROPS or RUSH BURROW, cause I know those things will not work for sure. Slightly incorporate those ideas into builds and you ahve yourself a tactic. I'm saying if people used them a bit more, it could change something.

I am not saying zerg will crush terran. I'm saying people make zerg UP because they think they are UP and they don't want to play the race. They have a better chance at beating terran. Not a for sure, but better.

Nydus, you're thinking too small. Put a nydus in their main, sure it will fail. put nyduses to have better map control? Thats thinking outside the box. If you can jump across the map in a couple of seconds, that would be huge for getting a flank. Exploiting terran immobility just like that.

Things that hinder zerg is not being open minded to new ideas. Thinking that things will fail just because its zerg.

Yes. Burrow isn't going to make you win a game. I'm really tired of people just going "LOLOL JUST NYDUS GUYS" It's not that easy. Okay, you get a flank on them, but it really doesn't matter since they are all clumped up in a ball and on these maps your just splitting up your army to die in the linear pathways. That's if you even make it to nydus.

I'm just really tired of all the people that go, oh guys just use burrow/nydus you win ez pz! Okay, then you go try it in game in high/mid diamond and see how well that plays out.

Also, your friend being 20 diamond; I'm talking about ranking as in points, high diamond is around 1800+ points, mid around 1200. The ranking like #1, #10 etc is dependent on your league, so you can get into a new league and be #1 with around 800 points.

The game is a lot more complex then just use nydus or burrow.

There is a ton of statistical evidence showing zerg is UP, and pretty much every zerg pro agrees.

Are you kidding??? Flanking is huge as zerg. Even if its linear you have 2 places to attack. Maximizing your dps. If you can surround them totally thats even better.

Terrans are greedy so they mostly mule, so when they stim, burrow, and it basically wastes the stim and keeps your army alive. If they scan that could be a problem, but its worth a chance to do. Have you thought of that?
I know the game is complex and simple things like saying, use burrow is useless. But saying use burrow to survive a stim slaughter? That could be useful. It's almost like blinking away when they stim up.

I'm not saying I'm a good zerg player. People who are good can use these small things to their advantage. Good players can put these tactics into their builds without screwing up as much.

Try new things, don't focus on just using burrow the whole game. Incorporate it into the strategy.
What about burrow and nydus? Have you thought of combining those two? nydus behind enemies with half roaches and burrow towards them. Sure its a basic tactic, might not work, but with some refining to it, new things could come out.
Nydusing to opponents main is a crap idea. Nydusing around the whole map is a great idea. sure its basic, and needs refining, but its a start for a strategy.

Remember when zerg players started to say "Thors are so OP vs mutas." Then someone discovered the magic box, and suddenly, thors aren't as scary. That's something noone knew about until they started trying new things.

I am just tired of seeing games where zerg encounters a wall, spends his money trying to bust it and losing.
I love games where zerg encounters a wall, expands a bunch, and win in the late game.

Don't hinder progress of the game. There are lots of terran players and that means there are a lot of chances for them to experiment and come up with strategies. Telling others that zerg is UP makes people not want to play it. Thus, hindering progress. They are only UP because people follow what everyone else is doing with them.

I didn't say flanking wasn't good, but getting a nydus just to do so is too much. Yes, zerg can win with innovation but there still a need for balance changes to the game, Blizzard will continue patching, so why not throw zerg some buffs..

This. Surrounding and flanking makes the biggest difference with ANY race.

What people have to learn is that Zerg isn't a "planned" race. You can't go into a game and think "okay, I'll mass up Drones, then go for Mutalisk". Just like any race, you have to scout and react accordingly; especially with Zerg.

Buff what? What specifically does zerg need?

But surrounding is easier with zerg. Because of their ability to get a lot of units fast, they can overpower others in the unit count. = easier to surround.

If you go into a game and just say = SCOUT GO then that won't do much. You need a basic build and then branch off from that. Smooth transitions into things the opponent would do.

A good player would be someone who scouts and reacts with great skills, or someone who applies a lot pressure onto the other player without the all in feeling.

You can fix the obvious flaws like how terrible hydras are. They need to be way faster off creep to allow for some micro. ATM they are used pretty much never, when they used to be one of the main units, and are still zergs "poster" unit that they use for all their ads. Also, adding a easier mechanic for creep spread, and decreasing the root/build time for a spinecrawler. Sunkens in broodwar we're great for defense, at the moment if you scout a cheese it doesn't even matter since it takes double the rush time of maps to get one down.

Also, nerfing terran a little bit like increasing the build time of a tech lab or the cost of stim.

I also don't play zerg, so it's not like this is benefiting me. Zerg may not feel like they at a disadvantage when they play the other 2 races, but playing the other 2 races and you get put up against a zerg you feel it's a lot easier to control the pace of the game and win.

Its the responsibility of the player to spread his creep. Hydras move fast on creep so theres no reason to increase the speed off creep. Zerg players just need to spawn more tumors. Easier mechanic for creep spread? Overlords can spew creep and the creep tumors are as easy as it gets.
Spinecrawlers have that time limit because unlike photon cannons, it can move. If they were permanently static then yes I would argue for that too.

Zerg needs to find the timings on when to drone and when to make units. If they rush you early, why not just make units earlier? Zerg players need to stop being so vulnerable by droning for 3 minutes.

Even on creep they aren't that useful, you can't micro them and once they pop all your creep tumors they become completely useless. They aren't anywhere near the level they were in broodwar, they had a speed upgrade. Right now they just sit back and do damage, hardly anyone gets them. There is no micro mechanic to them. Spreading creep is stupid right now, it shouldn't be either you spread creep or you lose. If you don't engage on creep, your screwed. Once we get on bigger maps it's going to be even harder to get the creep spread, even if your amazing at it all they do is go and pop all of them. They should be viable off creep and get an advantage on creep, not useless off. Having no ability to micro off creep is just a pain, can't utilize the mobility of zerg, which is it's main lure.

Also, I'm not getting your point.. yes they can move but the rush distance on most maps is like 30-40s, so you scout a cheese, oh god throw down a spine crawler! Ohwait, 50s gg. Zerg needs some form of static defense that actually works, in brood war it was around 30s to get them down and stopped a lot of timing attacks. Who cares if you can move them, it's not like it's game breaking to have them move and build fast, they still cost a lot to get early on. They can keep the root time and just make them build faster, so it's a penalty to move them. They still have to be put on creep, and 12 seconds to root is useless. When you do want to move them into position it will be too late.

All these statements you are making just are general statements that people think zerg should play, but haven't actually tried to do this in 1v1. Maybe play a lot more 1v1 instead of team games so you can see why this is a problem, team games are completely different than 1v1, stuff works way differently and each unit takes on a new role and races are different in balance. Just play a ton of 1v1s, get to a higher rank and you will see. It may seem fine from watching matches and just going "oh they just need to do this" but it's just not.

Or maybe you just haven't played a lot of games, and just watched a ton of matches. You just need to play way more to see why this is all a problem, watching matches you see what they are doing and it looks easy and think they should have added in nydus or whatever, but when your actually in game it's way different.

Just get more experience before repeating all these general things that people think why zerg is losing. None of it is very specific, or would it help, specific little changes need to be made, not these general things. A tiny tweak with 2 in root time in a spinecrawler could be huge, or 10hp more on a hydra could be huge. I'm not proposing huge buffs or nerfs like 30s off build time, or +3 to speed.
