Well thats a unique price range. Anyhow, your best bet is a netbook. Sadly, netbooks without a NVIDIA Ion NB chipset, is a no go. I mean ya you can somewhat game on them, but the Ion is a better unit.

So go for a netbook with your current range, or wait and double your range for a better quality product.

There is no such laptop for that price range for general, everyday use if you lump in gaming. Well, that's not wholly correct. Solitaire, and very, very low graphic games are playable on netbooks. Otherwise, you can get away with MS Office, Internet, and Skype on a netbook, which can fulfill general everyday use.

Realistically, if you're looking for a laptop for general use, decent size screen(13 inches or larger), and some gaming ability (CS, WoW, CoD, even L4D), I'd suggest you look at laptops around the $600-$900 range. There a some laptops in this range that have a relatively decent sized screen, and decent/good M-GPU that can allow gaming. Alienware has a few models around $800-$950 that have received generally high reviews. Asus has a couple of laptops that combine Intel graphics built in with a M-GPU, and has it toggle between the two to save battery life. I'd suggest looking at www.tomshardware.com and www.anandtech.com for some laptop reviews to give you an idea of what you're looking at or looking for.

if you decide to buy a gaming laptop don't buy a lapyop whit a geforce graphics card.
They use optimus in there drivers wich causes problems if you want to play games that have punkbuster as there security like Moh or BC2.

i say this cause i have tghis problem ;)

Like my laptop?

ASUS UL50VT
450GB HDD
Intel Core 2 Duo @1.3GHz
Nvidia GeForce G210M 512Mb RAM
4GB RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

This thing is around $700 to $1000 depending on where you buy it from and I HIGHLY recommend it. Defaults Crysis to Medium and runs around 40 to 60 FPS. Plays WoW,CS:S,DoD:S,TF2,L4D,L4D2,Battlefield 2,Medal of Honor,BF:BC2(judging by how well it ran Medal of Honor), Fallout 3(provided the Steam stores requirements are correct and accurate).

For a laptop this thing is pretty beefy. Less than an inch thick when closed. 15 inch wide screen monitor. Both a dedicated and integrated GPU, for power or powersaving on the go. up to 12+ hours on a single charge(although mine is probably less because I haven't really taken care of the battery).

If you can get this bad boy. DO IT.

Bad decision, in my opinion. Here's why:

Athlon64 1.6GHz, 1MB L2 Cache: It's a single core CPU based off of old technology from what I can tell. I had an Athlon XP 2800+ before moving to an A64 3000 back in 2004. Good then, not so good now.

3GB DDR2 Ram: My A64 ran on DDR, not DDR2. And what speeds are these RAM running at? 533MHz? Not much of a DDR2 stick than a faster DDR stick

Graphics: Interated (ATI Mobility Radeon 3200). Say goodbye to PC games... well, you can play MS Pinball or Solitaire, I guess. And popcap games on the Internet. There's your PC gaming!

Battery Life: 2-3 hours. For a netbook?! Read Trauma's previous post as that laptop can get that many hours, and then some, AND can play real PC games.

The use of a netbook is to provide a person an extra, ultra-portable method of accessing the Internet, and using business or school-related applications, like MS Office and MS Excel. If you want to game, Internet browsing games and the basic card games built in is what you can hope for, unless you go for very low res, low graphic games as netbooks typically do not have enough CPU/GPU power to run a game at all. To me, netbooks exist to complement a primary use PC or laptop, not be its replacement.

Well if your main purpose is to game on it then your going to be better off building a desktop. If you want to game on a laptop your going to end up paying 1k+ USD

dr.noobias has one it is very good

It'd be helpful to post the brand and model since for all I know he's using an alienware MX11 laptop, which it better be good, but that's outside your price range.
