So is it just me, or is anyone else noticing that everything internet-based is becoming less.. free?

I've noticed it for a while now, but with the new TF2 update of having to purchase items to play... well I started doing some personal research.

About 7 years ago, I joined a fun little site called Neopets (don't judge me). To me being a little 11 year old kid, it was the most amazing thing ever. You can create your own fun little cartoon pet, play games, fight virtual battles, etc. All for FREE! So I went onto the site a few weeks back, just to see what was going on with it. Seems nowadays taht the only way you can make your little Neopet look awesome, is by spending about $30 USD for 1000 points at the store, which doesn't get you very much.

Another thing was a virtual game called Second Life. Now, I haven't heard too much about it, except that it's kinda like the Sims... only you pay for everything you pu on your virtual avatar... with real cash. People will pay like 200 bucks just so their character looks awesome.

Heck, even Facebook is incorporating games and apps that require you to buy credits using real money, in order to play games. So watch out people addicted to Farmville!

So where is all this going? Will one day all of us be forced to pay 50 bucks just to get one small virtual item? I mean c'mon, I pay enough money just to have internet every month, so why should I have to pay to play on a virtual critter site?

Thank God eGO doesn't charge us to be members. And hopefully you never will. *suspicious glare*

Useless thread, I know... it just makes me rage. :cursing:

Anyways,
Tell me your thoughts, stories, etc.

~Have a nice day!~

Wait, did that TF2 update turn the game into another Pay 2 Win shooter where you have to spend cash to buy decent weapons ?

It is not a pay 2 win, everything you can buy in the store, you can get by just playing, it does not matter what items you have, but how you use them, so even if u can buy items so you wont have to earn them, doesnt change anything. People need to stop blaming the shop for their own fail. =/

I don't blame the shop for he fail. It's just stupid that people who spend a lot of money (and some people do go all out -.-) get all the best items, while people who actualy play for fun get ownd by them.

Mind you Second Life has been like that since it's inception so far as I know, and the game is well over 5 years old. So it's been like that, and you can actually make money off of it.

You don't have to pay for the items in TF2. One of the new items (Darwin's Shield Thing) I found through a drop.

*applies a swift palm to the face*

I know about the TF2 update. -.- It just reminded me of this. And I know about Second Life as well, I just forgot about the making money thing as well, so thanks for that reminder.

It still makes me a rager though.

The only items that are available strictly through payment in TF2 are aesthetic only--such as the black/white paint for your hats, etc.

Anything like weapons, etc. that effect actual gameplay will never, ever be store-only, as Valve personally stated.

Ohh myy. I used to play Neopets too, lol! :D
Yeah, Some games you have to use real money to buy things just to make your character look cooler or better, etc. It sucks, but it's a way of some games do to promote the game or get money for it. =/

General Rule of Life: If you think you can make money off of something, someone somewhere is already trying to do it.

Not saying I agree with it, just saying it happens.

This model has been around forever, micro-transactions are really big with free games. They get you to come in and play for free, then you end up paying a ton of money on a ton of small things.

Internet costs money. Things on the internet cost money.

I don't see the point of this thread. I haven't seen any overarching themes of paying more.

There are just more thing available.

There are still TONS of free games and stuff.

I disagree with the second sentence. I have been playing quite a few flash games lately and I have seen that you have to "donate" to the creator of the game to get a few extra levels/guns/characters.

Example is Mochigames. or whatever it is. They helped make Crush the Castle 2, Bloons TD4, and a few others, mostly multiplayer flash games.

The internet is starting to become a business place for everything, not a place for fun and games

The Idea came up as a solution for P2P (pay to play), by adding item malls ect. to make money on the game without charging us a monthly fee has become quite popular.

If you noticed though the games with item malls have taken a great deal of the fan base from P2P games and are becoming more and more popular day by day.
why pay to play when you can play for free and .. maybe spend 10-20$usd for the cool stuff.

I think the TF2 update is a nice way to earn money through their fans. Gives them more money and budget to work on a new TF game or even better updates

If you owned Mochigames and had to host a lot and generally had large bills to keep your servers up, you would charge people for extra stuff.
