Best Buy charges for PS3 firmware upgrades

Best Buy has been doing this kind of stuff forever. When they started selling Macs they charged my sister $40 for Geek Squad Mac Optimization that consisted of finding out her intended username, typing it in, and running a defrag(on a new computer!). My sister's stupidity(buying a Mac at all when everything she does is Windows based) and gullibility aside, Best Buy's actions are downright criminal. If she didn't live 2000 miles away I would have taken her right back in and demanded a refund and an apology.

If people are ignorant enough to not get the update themselves, then damn, that doesn't look good for the sony fan-boys or sony.

As if something like this really effects Sony. I imagine the number of people who are using Best Buy for firmware updates is incredibly small. Most people who buy a console understand, at the very least, how it works and a small amount of electronic know-how.

I'm sure if they didn't know anything about firmware, they were swindled buy the Geek Squad who gave them a phone call telling them there was an update for their console and that they should bring it in or however they do it.

Praying on the ignorant for monetary gain never gets old.

I remember awhile back they were charging 150 bucks to install your PS3 and set it up at your house.... How much more of rip off for lazy people can a business advertise?

I have a PS2 and a PSP as some of you know and i wouldn't even let them "Upgrade" my sony anything, Trust me i know what i am doing but that's not the point i think this is not only unfair but it's wrong on so many levels!

They are just finding a way to exploit peoples lack of knowledge, they know they have no idea so they come in and act like they know exactly what they are doing so people trust them. Geek squad is probably the most useless "tech" (i use this sparingly) group ever. Their knowledge of computers goes as far as plugging it and installing an operating system, and then telling you have viruses (I personally have never used them, just heard horror stories). I don't even think you need any qualification to get a job as one.

Now this is not particularly true. Around here you have to have some Computer knowledge (certifications definitely help) to even get a blasted interview. Some are not good as others, but I know several guys who have their A+, CCNA and other certifications and work as Geek Squad.

Well here, they just hire random people. Guess it varies per store.

This should answer most, if not all, of your questions.

That goes against sony's terms of use policy. It says at the bottom any unauthorized selling or renting of firmware is prohibited.

Also, I got screwed. A long time ago I had an "OS not found" issue and was told the same thing. Damn, thats one laptop I could still have.

Yeah, Best Buy's support service sucks.
My mom bought a netbook at Best Buy, it turned out it had something wrong with it. Think it was the memory, not sure. After about half a year, she decided to get it fixed. She explained the problem to them, suggested what to do, and they alway told her, "If that was the problem, it would never have worked." And they never listened when she told them that it never did work.

So, they replaced everything but kept the same memory. She took it back later, clearly said that they tried replacing everything but the memory, and it still didn't work, so they probably shouldn't do that. Same thing happened.

Finally, the third time, she told them exactly what to do. She said to just replace the memory, nothing else. Despite the stores claims of, "Oh, it wouldn't have worked if that was the case," they finally agreed to try it. Guess what happened? IT WORKED.

@above
Actually, they aren't selling the update. They're selling the service of installing the update by turning on the PS3 and connecting it to the internet.

[Edit]
The one thing Best Buy ever did right was its old warranty plan, where no matter what, you get something worth what you paid for. As in, you buy an Xbox with a three year warranty, price goes down, you bring it in (broken) and you get a newer, better Xbox. But they got rid of that...

Also, quite some time ago (probably shortly before or after the release of Halo 3) they checked my broken Xbox with an expired warranty for red rings of death. Out of pure luck, it just so happened that when they turned it on, it got the red rings of death :D

Overall, everything Best Buy's support service touches has a chance of breaking.

i dont care if best buy does this. if people are dumb enough to pay 30 bucks for something they can easily easily easily get for free. then consider it a moron tax and they deserve to pay it.

*sigh*

And so the stupidity of people continues.

They pry on everyone who knows nothing of technology.

I feel sorry for the people that are actually paying for this stuff, especially since all the firmware updates have been adding stuff that isnt really necessary or critical for the system.

If they would take 5 minutes to go on google they would know that they can easily do it even if their PS3 is not connected to the internet in any way.

If they are stupid enough to pay for it then they deserve to be paying it.

Lmao 1 best buy must not see that when an update is out your PS3 makes you update it as soon as you log on or else you can't sign in there are a few exceptions though like if it's a euro update that the Americans don't need then Sony won't make you update but I always have anyways 2 best buy is just a bunch of idiots but damn I would love to work there to tell the people to take their PS3 back home to where they could update it for free anyone who pays for that must have just recently gotten one cause Sony has been releasing them for free since launch

Some of the Best Buys near where I live have pretty good Geek Squad guys that I could trust. Other than that, I never speak with them. If I need help with something involving Sony, I have a friend's rich father who works with Sony that can help. :D
