My cousin's wife started working from home. Her office provided a Cisco router(i believe it is wireless - has 3 antennae) and computer, the set up was ok. However, he now wants to use his personal computer. I got him a KVM switch and he plugged into the router. However, he cannot retrieve his email. Also he is fearful that his wife's office will track his usage, have access to his email etc. Someone suggested that he get his own router and plug the Cisco router and his computer into it. Is this a viable option? Also, is it necessary? Can he get to his email? And what access will the IT Dept. have to his personal info? Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

If he has Internet usage at the moment and can't get to his e-mail it depends.

Is he trying to read his e-mail via HTTP?(web browser)
or is he trying to use a program e.g. outlook to connect via SMTP/POP3?

if it's the latter, then it's likely that the router is blocking port 25

You'll need to log into the routers firmware to be able to tell any more information

What model of router is it?

as far as the IT department tracking it's thesiable they have 100% of the information send over the INTERNET (if the router is configured to send the logs to them, this is unlikely.

as far as information traveling over the cisco router goes, everything is typically encrypted and raw INTERNET usage data will only show anything you type into the INTERNET and send (most of that being encrypted)

normally the router has the login/password written on it, if not what is the model # and I may be able to get you the default passwords (you can connect to the router by going to 198.168.1.0) in your web browser.

Almost. It's usually 192.168.0.1. Open up the command prompt and type in ipconfig, and it will tell you. It's the default gateway.

i will try that, but odd update. When he disconnected the router and connected his home computer to optimum online modem he can not connect to the internet. I will have to get to his house to get the info I believe he has the pword to connect to the remote server, but probably not to configure, or is it the same? oh, and I believe it is http email through optimum online.
