HOKAY! So... little man has decided he wants to play TEAM FORTRESS! First obstacle in your path little man is WHICH TEAM MAN DO YOU WISH TO BE?! I, being smartest Heavy in eGO, have crafted LONG LIST for you to read and understand! Hah!

*I totally ripped this picture here off some random Google search... censored for the kiddies.

II. HOW TO CREDIT TEAM
OKAY NEW LITTLE ONE... have you decided where you want to reside in the grand scheme of TEAM FORTRESS? Good. Once you have picked class to kill COWARDS with, it is time to know what you can do to HELP and be CREDIT TO TEAM!

  • The guide to winning is in balance.
Each class offers something unique to the playing field, and in a sense - much of the game revolves around a pseudo-rock-paper-scissors ruleset.

For example, Spies are exceptionally capable of taking down Heavies or Snipers, due to the role of a Sniper and Heavy often require their attention at the front ... and often forget what lays behind them.

Be aware of this balance, and if your team is flooded by Snipers & Spies, make the sacrifice and pick a Medic or a class that will allow you to contribute more easily to allow your team to conquer!

The team that plays well together, wins together!

  • Be a Jack-of-All-Trades, and a Master-of-three.

It is incredibly important to familiarize yourself with all nine classes in Team Fortress 2. Doing so, allows you to understand the basic strengths and weaknesses of each class, and how best to fight against each one. The other part of that is once you've found one class you really enjoy playing - pick TWO others and get yourself comfortable playing them. For example, my three classes are Heavy's, Soldier's and Demomen. Each class compliments one another, but requires different skill sets to employ effectively. Learning three classes will make you more valuable in a moment where a clinch victory is at hand.

    The more you know...
  • Lone Wolves get Eaten.

There is a saying in nature that when a wolf goes rogue, the rest of the pack eat the wolf - for the greater good of the pack. This is TEAM Fortress 2, not WHINEY-LONER-BABY-MAN Fortress 2. Don't worry about kills, score, or any nonsense - Team Fortress 2 is unique in that you are contributing to your team, and that contribution - no matter how small will elevate a team to victory. ONE additional Medic, can help make that one final push to capture the final point... to seize victory for your team.
  • Support your teammates!

When your teammates do something, like getting a great headshot across the map, saving your butt from a Spy, or anything like that - say Thanks! You'd be surprised how just acting with cameraderie can really boost your team morale!

    [*]NO WHINING!

The other part of supporting your teammates, is not saying or doing things to bring them down. A team that plays well together, wins together - and since we all make mistakes - there's no reason to reprimand someone for not 'being there' when there wasn't really much he or she could do about it!

III. DEALING WITH BABIES
umadhvy.jpg
Every now and again you are going to run into some jokesters, hooligans, and for lack of a better term.... Troll. Your best options are to continue having a good time, and to mute them. Yes... I know... being the bigger man can require a lot of maturity - but I have faith in you guys. After all, being the bigger man is my job... I AM THE HEAVY!

If things start to really get out of hand, where the shenanigans these hooligans are proliferating get out of hand, call your HANDY DANDY eGO ADMINISTRATOR! DAVE CO™. eG's and eGO's are always around so find one on vent or the forums and make your case! But most importantly, when you're on the servers - YOU ARE A REFLECTION OF ALL OF eGO! So be mature, be courteous, and have a good time.

INTERMISSION
AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

IV. SHOWING RESPONSIBILITY

Every so often... we do something that we regret. While most TF2 players may fail to follow this step, we are eGO members and affiliates - and we are held to a higher standard then the rest. If you make a bad decision, screw up, say something you shouldn't of... own up to it. This applies to both IN GAME and OUT OF GAME philosophies. We are a COMMUNITY here, so we are responsible for how we treat one another! Be reasonable, honest, and have fun - but be proud of what community you're a part of! Be kind, courteous, and respectful to your fellow teammates, and comrades. We're all fighting for the same thing! INTELLIGENCE! Er... I mean ... VICTORY THROUGH COMMUNITY!

V. WINNING!
TO THE VICTOR GOES THE SPOILS!

Team Fortress 2 by all means is a competitive environment, designed to create some breakneck moments where the action is intense, and that one final push is close at hand... so when you achieve FLAWLESS VICTORY Ahem... I mean you achieve a win, be gracious about it! A simple 'GG' is an act of sportsmanship - something all eGO members should keep in the back of their minds while playing. You don't gain any extra points for being a jerk, and that's that.

VI. LOSING...
"The taste of defeat has a richness of experience all its own."
cry_some_more_icon387.jpg

Things to expect after you lose a round...
  • Every Heavy Weapons Guy: "OOHHHH NOOOO!!!"
    [*]"YOUFAILED!"

The other side of winning, is losing. Losing is something that will inevitably happen... and one can not truly understand the thrill of victory without tasting the bitterness of defeat. When you lose... be graceful about it. There is no need to get all defensive, and loud-mouthed about how so-and-so screwed up, or how it was Billy Jack's fault for not healing you... even though your team was two caps behind. Losing with honor, and dignity, speaks volumes about your character... and the people you associate with. So understand that Victory is sought out to be achieved, but losing is an ever-persistant part of competition. Don't get frustrated, heal up, reload, and respawn. It's time to...

KILL LITTLE COWARDS!!! OOOWAAHHH

Now... BEAT IT.

This is well written and has some excellent advice. I would add that while everyone should have 3 classes that they're excellent with, EVERYONE should at least dabble with medic, so that they are at least comfortable with him. Sometimes, a team doesn't need a virtuosic medic to win; they just need A medic. It can really be a game changer.

Other than that, though, I love it. Well done, and excellent reading for a new player.

Dreadmaker, I totally agree with your advice... added a BLAM! to my post.

Mine are Scout, Sniper, Soldier, in that order. And then I can med well enough for one of my friends competitive teams to occasionally ask me to sub for their normal medic, so I'd say I'm covered ;)

Great Guide though!

EDIT: Actually, I can demo decently in 6v6 also, but I'm terrible at it in large amount of player games.

I would say Medic, Engie, Scout, but I think I can hold my own in any class.

Thanks guys.

Let's work on making this guide incredibly expansive and instructional for new players. If you have something to commit, please let me know and I'll add it in as a BLAM! or POW! addition.

Whole team likes speech... not big surprise.

I would like to comment about the Lone Wolf part, both Spies and Scouts can benefit from being off on their own and coming from directions no-one else is, this means the enemies attention is not focused on you. As a spy that is invaluable for getting among their ranks unnoticed, and as a scout that gives the advantage of surprise, I've been able to get picks on enemy Medics, Engineers, and other such valuable classes multiple times and then speed off in a different direction before the other enemy classes around have time to react and defend their defenseless teammates.

That being said, you shouldn't be running off and fighting on your own unless you know you have the skill to do it with at least partial success, and unless you feel that doing that will be helping the rest of your team.

The classes I handle are Spy, Sniper, Pyro and Engineer. I'd more worried about a player that is average good in every class, but actually doesn't even know 1 class well.

This guide shows a newcomer, like me, that we have bunch of clever people around here ;). Nice work mate!

Great post.

I end up playing a mix of combat medic and engie a lot. Capturing L or C on Blackmesa as a lone medic... priceless.
