Ok I had to reinstall windows the other day.
After all the updates were installed and all my drivers ect were updated.....
I installed steam and tried to play INS and TF2 and when I join a server it lock up.
The whole computer locks. The only button that works is the pc reset.

My ancient artifact = p4 3.2 / Win XP sp3 / 1 gig of ddr2 5200 ram
radeon 9600 256mb video card. I have plenty of hard drive space 40 gigs or so.
I know steam logs errors but I couldnt find the file.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Oh and before the crash and fresh windows install I had no problems running most of the standard and Source steam games.

Can you give me the driver version of your Radeon card?
Easiest way to do this is by hitting CTRL+R and typing in "dxdiag". If a window appears, click OK/Yes.
Click the display tab and the driver information will be listed to the right.

You mean the Windows Key + R?

And if possible, just post screenshots of the tab.
