I'm surprised to see no post yet.

I got an email yesterday from XFX about these cards and got extremely excited.

Unfortunately, they're slower than the old 5870's and sometimes even the GTX 470.

http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-6850-6870-review/1

I'm not completely understanding their methods on this launch, but they're still reasonably priced. Oh, and they FINALLY support 120hz monitors, so that's a big plus for me.

The crossfire scaling is amazing..........2x6870's are basically on par with 2x5870's while beating/losing in some games. This is with fairly early drivers too so i expect it to get a little better.

But the main thing is they cost a ton less........6870 goes for $240 retail and you can find some above/below that price. 6850 are selling as low as like $170.

They also produce a lot less heat and less power/the chip and card itself is much much smaller. They're a more efficient 5870/5850 and lose generally about 7% performance which isn't much especially for the price

Also overclocking is amazing.......6870's can easily get over 1ghz with minor voltage tweaking. Im surprised the 6870 runs cooler than the 6850 though....probably just a better stock heatsink.

This is because this is the 68xx is mid-range pricing. They have yet to release the 69xx line which will be the top end. The article PewPew linked specifically states this was a move to compete with the GTX 460. Don't worry, if you're just waiting on getting monster powerhouses, they be a-comin'.

You mean that I linked? Haha

I just think it's a bit confusing, why not call these the 6700 series?

To make room for Fusion probably. Or maybe just to have more enthusiast level cards. I've sort of gotten used to it.
I really want to get one to unbox and review. Mmm. Would be sexy.

You didn't read the whole article did you? /sigh

They said they're making room for more low-end cards to fit into the spectrum.

You beat me to it. I read on it yesterday was thinking about posting it but I fell asleep on my desk as it was 3 AM for me :(

They don't want to call it the 6700 series because they will still be producing the 5700 series and selling them so they don't want to confuse ppl by thinking these cards are replacing the 5700 series when its not.

On the other hand, they are replacing the 5800 series and yes as said before, new higher end 6900 are going to come out. Im gonna guess theyre either super fast single chip cards or most likely dual chip cards.

any idea's on the price? =D

EDIT: nvm found it, but still wtf, 208 € for such a gfx card?? awmg. mines gonna cost 600. *doubts once again!*

??? wat r u saying lol?? why is urs gonna cost $600....

Anyway the pricing on these are awesome especially for the performance. Crossfire them and you will have an amazing setup especially for the price.

Good guess, seeing how the only other option is that they would be slow single chip cards, and since they're gonna be the high end chips, that doesn't seem likely. :P

What happened to your typing? :confused1:
They're the performance improvement equivalent of what the 6700 should have been.
The 6900 series will be both single and dual GPU cards. Cayman (6950 + 6970) will be single GPU, while Antilles (6990) will be dual GPU.
The naming is a little stupid, because it makes you think you're getting a better card than what you're actually getting. Not that they're bad cards, but still. It should have been called the 6700 series, and they could have used the 6200 moniker for Fusion or whatever.

lol..........im just saying what AMD said at their press event or w/e when they actually released the cards.

They said they didn't want to confuse consumers by naming it the 6700 series because they would still be making and producing 5700 series cards. But they aren't making 5800 series cards anymore from what i know, they said supplies will probably last till the end of this year.

I was worried these would blow NVidia out of the water entirely, but with the 6850 being on par with GTX 460, and the 6870 being slightly better, relatively speaking, (Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/21/ati-radeon-hd-6870-and-hd-6850-review-roundup/ ) I think I'll hang on to my GTX 460 SLI rig for a little while longer. Waiting for NVidia to respond...

And then AMD will have 6900 to respond to Nvidia.
Nvidia really needs to get their **** together and make a powerful, yet low power card.

there was a leak with Nvidia..........a card named the GTX 580 should be shipping out before the end of this year if u want to see them on top

More than likely it is just going to be a GF100 chip with all the SPs enabled (512).

It will consume more power, and produce more heat than a 480. Not really what i want.

I like competetion, else you get a 5850 going from $260 to $320 in a few weeks.

It's GF110, and from other leaked specs, it's going to be the "GTX 490" everyone wanted, with dual GF104's in it.
