Can a 550W OCZ fatal take on a 470 fermi rig

quick question possibly building a comp for my friend

i5 760, 470 fermi, 4 gbs of ram

think it will hold it
 
Dont know actually, I got an OCZ 550Watt too and this is my rig;

- Sapphire HD 4870 1GB DDR5
- AMD Phenom X3 555 3.2 Ghz (or something)
- 2GB RAM
- about 5 120mm fans with blue led and 1x200mm blue led fan.
 
Hm... let's see here..
95W + 225W + 50W + 50W (OC) +25 = 445W. But without the OC, that would be around 400W. So it could. It would be more efficient if you had a 600-650W.
 
It should be able too, Though I would highly not recommend it. If you stress test with prime and furmark at the same time your PSU could fail, even at constant 50-60% load its still a bit of stress.

Check the amps on the 12v rail. Plus you won't get much overclocking headroom, and more than likely your 12v rail would be unstable.
 
That power supply is SLI Ready, not Certified. This could mean that both PCI-e connectors are on the same rail, since Certified requires that PCI-e connectors are each on their own rails.

Since the 12v rails on that PSU provide 25amps and the total 12v wattage is 450W, that means 37.5amps if you are plugging one connector per rail, or a total of 18.75amp if they are both on the same (is that right? Someone double check, plz).

Two available 6-pin PCI-E power dongles" regarding their 470 offering.

He's only going to be running one 470 off it. So he's good, although it wouldn't hurt to get a better PSU.
 
Should hold up. 600w is whats recommended for a GTX 460 SLI setup by NVidia. I agree with Phobus though, get at least a 600w PSU to be on the safe side.

I'm gonna click around and check this out to make sure, but I made that post with the idea in my head that the 470 requires two 6 pin connectors, not one, per card.

That and I'm trying to go by amperage to determine compatibility, not the recommended wattage of the PSU (I don't understand why they use that).
 
OK, for now, I'm going with, "No\I wouldn't attempt".

From what I can tell, the PSU is .5amps low in 12v (for the EVGA 470 example) which "may" cause problems.

Furthermore, I'm not sure how it would handle, say, a second 470. For the first, you can plug in the only two available PCI-e connectors. Add a second and you will need TWO adapters that go from 2 Molex connectors down to one PCI-e 6 pin connector. That means you can use no more than 1 Molex connector from the power supply for other peripherals (an IDE based optical drive, for instance) in order to power the second card. Whether or not they will we be getting the necessary amperage in this configuration is currently (no pun intended) over my head as I'm still learning about PSUs myself.
 
Yes but the combos work so nice and they save me quite the money on my buddys build so i guess i can search more
 
That rig would run fine on a (quality) 400w PSU.

since the fatality 550 is of average quality, It should do well.

The Fatality 550w has OCP, so even if your system were to draw more than 550w (there is no way that it can), the PSU would just shut down before anything bad happened (and if it does shut down, then you know you need better PSU)
