so i recently picked up this game and love it. as you can see my comp specs are my sig.

the problem i've been having is with my FPS and GPU usage. basically i can run everything maxed out good but im having fps drops, tho my gpu usage will still stay very low. so im confused as to why its dropping in fps. why doesn't it just use more gpu power to keep the fps high??

i've tested this every which way. ultimately having vsync on and off makes no difference, the game will stay capped at 60 fps. with AA/AF on max it will be at 60 FPS with around 25-30 gpu usage, but when things get hectic my fps will drop and the max gpu usage i've noted was about 60%.
with AA/AF off the base usage is 12-15%. when things get hectic my fps will drop and the max gpu usage will be about 50%.

sometimes however the gpu usage won't go up and the frames will just keep going down. im keeping track of both with MSI afterburner. i go into game and run around a building full of people, for instance, and note fps drops in game (because it gets glitchy). then i'll alt/tab and check what the stats are on my gpu.
im just really confused why the usage is so low and allows frame drops. is there something, specifically with the game possibly, hindering its ability to use more gpu power? i thought maybe my CPU was bottlenecking in some way, but again its gone up as high as 60% usage depending on the settings, yet with lower settings it won't go up that high (even tho it obviously can), it just lets the frames drop.

so confusing

ok just did another test in this specific area that was REALLY bad frames. (in a building looking at a certain spot) with AA/AF it wouldn't go higher than 25% usage to get more than 10-15 fps. as soon as i looked elsewhere or walked past the spot i was looking the frames would go up and usage would jump around.
without AA/AF it wouldn't go above 11% usage to get more than 10-15 fps.

this is making me think it has something to do with the game in some way. where literally not even changing the graphic options grants better performance AT ALL. its pretty crazy.

this is also the only game i've had issues with this.

Hmm, I guess the basic first thing someone would say is to update the video drivers. Also, can you the settings in CCC and override the game?

But other than that, the game might be CPU intensive. I am still trying to confirm. You have a dual core phenom, but you say its unlocked...multiplier or triple core unlocked?.....Edit: Nevermind, I see that you unlocked the last 2 cores so I don't see you bottlenecking the game.

What resolution you playing at?

1680x1050 resolution. i can't update my video drivers because they are up to date. i made sure to get the latest before installing the game.

just for kicks i tested out the cpu usage in the same spot i tested the strange gpu usage, and it isn't going over 20% cpu usage average over all 4 cores. i dunno its really weird. so far its only been really bad in this one spot, but im only a few hours in so im kinda concerned.

everything i've googled i cannot find a real answer as to why my gpu may not use its full usage (other than being capped on fps, but it isn't)

edit: ok i tested it a few more times, and with AA/AF forced im seeing more CPU usage...kind of. CPU 0 will be at almost 100% load, but CPU 1/2/3 will be nearly 0%. maybe the game just isn't set to use more than one CPU??? especially since its through steam (that did concern me when i bought the game at the store).

guess i'll see if i can make it use more than 1 CPU or something...cause it does seem that is whats bottlenecking it

alright so i've found some info regarding fallout new vegas and fallout 3 where they do only use one core, there is some tweak stuff you can do for it linked HERE

for the multi core thing tho, it doesn't seem to be working (for me at least) because its still shows its only using 1 CPU in resource manager.

documents/my games/falloutnv/falloutprefs.ini

Open it in notepad, and find "bUseThreadedAI=0" Change the 0 to a 1 and save.

Fixed.

Edit: In the same file you can also change "iNumHavokThreads=1" to correspond to the number of CPU threads you have, but mine works just fine with the default 1, even though I have a triple core.

issue solved. i needed to download D3D9Gen_b3 which created a d3d9gen.dll file for me to add to my falloutnv folder (program files x86/steam/steamapps/common/falloutnv

everything about it is fixed.
