Everybody in Realism/on a Realism team will be mentioned, featured, and (likely) killed sometime throughout the series. Maybe today, maybe weeks from now. Gotta keep checking for yourself.
Also, just to keep things easier to understand, all would-be-German dialogue and ranks will be in English/their English counterparts. lol

Teams, people, names, maps, results, ranks: Real.
Weapons, groups/teams, events, mannerisms/abilities: Fake, some based off of real-life.
Deaths: Completely random. Characters who die are done for the the entire series. Sorry. It is truly random who dies. I have a system set up and when it tells me how many/who dies on each side, I work that into the story somewhere.

The town of Anzio, Italy...

dod_anzio.jpg

Something was wrong. It had to be, for there was nobody here. Check that, there were bodies there, but no living people. Had the bombings and shore bombardment been enough to force the Germans out of the city?

Brigadier General Boyle was in charge of the Anzio invasion on the Italian mainland and upon landing on her beaches, he expected opposition from the various buildings no more than 100 feet from the water. When it was deemed safe, he and his men advanced into the small village, clearing each building with cursory examinations along their way, to the edge of town. To this point, they had not seen a single living thing aside from themselves.

Was it going to be that easy?

It wasn?t the most pleasant environment, least of all for a Brigadier General of the German Army. Still, it was better than possible death. The entire remaining defense force of this town kept him company in her own sewer system, which was deep enough to keep them out of harm?s way from the constant shelling of the town above them. Dutchoper was never particularly thrilled about the CinC?s meddling in what he considered his own affairs, but the sudden, unannounced, appearance of his CinC the day before had been something of a blessing.

CinC Ravage had been present at the Normandy landings that took place no more than 24 hours previously. While there, they had managed to capture an American and, with the help of a mere Private who he was introduced to as ?The Brainwasher?, they had discerned from this mid-level non-commissioned officer the possibility of an invasion to the Italian mainland. The Allied forces had not entrusted him with this information deliberately, but there is little they could do to keep him from having accidentally bumped into an old friend back in the staging grounds at Britain. Such is exactly what had happened, so it was something of a fortunate coincidence to Ravage that this, of those thousands of men charging up that beach, was who they had picked up.

With this knowledge, Dutchoper?s men were alert and ready upon spotting the first bombers? approach. They all rushed for the nearest sewer entrance, as instructed. Now that the explosions had been stopped for some time, Dutchoper and his number two?Captain Blue Stealth?could guess that the Allies had begun their invasion.

?Blue, you take your men and head for the West exit up through the church. My group will take the South and check the bridge. You need not any more instructions. I trust you can handle matters beyond that.? Dutch told his Captain, a man with even more war experience than he had himself.

?It is as you say, sir.? Blue responded, cooly.

It never safe to assume anything in war. Boyle knew this, so he ordered his men to begin to check each and every room of each and every building to make sure there was not going to be any unfortunate surprises waiting for them. At the same time, he sent a team with his First Lieutenant to check out the integrity of the bridge in town. They might need to use it, so it would be essential to see if that was even possible.

?Estell,? Blue Stealth addressed his Sergeant, ?Take Private BlackBird and the two of you take the central sewer exit. Once you?ve cleared that alleyway, proceed across the street to the hotel and clear that. Corporal Zacharias, you and Private Greenlight Terror work your way around the North side of the church and then team up with them on the hotel. It?s the biggest building so I want it cleared first. PFC Smilodon. You are to take the central exit with Estell and work your way up the road East. I want that courtyard cleared too. Reverend, you are to secure the church while I climb the tower with my rifle. Six, you will stay at the bottom and watch my back.?

All of his men silently acknowledged his orders. They knew what they were doing.

Dutchoper moved quicker than Blue Stealth. His team was already at their sewer exit and assessing the bridge and surrounding area. There was a small group of Allies up on the bridge above them. These would be their first targets.

?Alright. Two groups. Going left with me are Privates Resistance, jackstar and Brainwasher. We are going to sneak around to the boathouse and go up through there. To the right will be First Sergeant Sumac, Corporal Razor, PFC Fir3 and Private D!ggo. Sumac, you and Fir3 sneak up the stairs. Razor?D!ggo?you are to sneak over to that other small sewer over there. It will take you to that building there. You go to the top and from there you can cover the bridge with your rifles. Move slow people. One slip-up and we?re sitting ducks.? Dutch issued orders to his own group.

Boyle had led his men back to the buildings closest to the beach to clear them first. His men would progress from there back through the entire village, one section at a time. They had no idea that, at this very moment, their German counterparts were doing the exact same thing, starting where he intended to finish. Boyle himself remained out by a small courtyard containing a well, while his men cleared a building and then came back outside with a, ?Clear.?

One of them was a PFC named Bas. Actually?he was a rather hefty fellow, so the men had taken to calling him Bigbas. As he came out of one of the buildings, closing the door behind him, a shot rang out from somewhere down the road.

Bigbas fell to his knees, looked Boyle in the eyes, and said in a low voice, ?Clear? before falling to his face. Boyle saw the bullet wound in the man?s head and knew he was a goner.

?Everybody take cover!? he yelled to the remaining men who were also in the courtyard at this moment.

By skill or luck, Sergeant Xiah was in the alley just as the men came up the stairs. He and the man with him, PFC Stealth Fighter, were both experts in covert ops, and quickly found a good hiding place inside some large crates. It was like something out of a Scooby Doo cartoon, but it was successful as the Germans searched around, but not inside, the crates. When they had moved along, Xiah decided that they would check out where that had come?seemingly out of the ground.

They went around another group of the same crates and saw a stairway down to a?basement of some sort?...from which the soldiers had come. They were supposed to be heading back to the beach to scan through buildings, but as a Sergeant he had the authority to check out something as interesting as this.

They ran into several Germans down in what ended up being sewers. These men were easy to dispatch, even if Xiah and Stealth Fighter had decided that it would be wisest to take out all opposition as quietly as possible. After all, everybody they came across was most surprised than the last, so why ruin the pattern? When they found a safe spot to do so, Boyle was radioed and updated on their position and latest findings. He relayed information back to them on the sniper and a plan was quickly formed.

It was just like hunting rabbits as a boy back home. No, that wasn?t quite right. You had to find the rabbits and then they were elusive little buggers. This was more like other days of Blue Stealth?s boyhood. Time spent at the fair, playing the hokey little ?gun range? game.

?Yes?? Blue thought, as he smiled?BOOM! went another one, followed by the sshhhh-click-sshhht sound of pulling back the bolt, ejecting the spent shell, and sliding the bolt back in place?to himself, ?Those cheap little targets kept popping out of random spots (BOOM! sshhh-click-sshhht), unaware of what was to come of them. Just like these Allies who keep popping out of random doorways.? BOOM! sshhh-click-sshhht.

Reverend Rhah used to be known just as Rhah, but he became famous?or infamous, depending on who you asked?for something that happened in the invasion of France. A small community of farmers had decided to fight back against the Germans on their own and, after a few hours of fighting, had found themselves pushed back into the confines of the local church. They refused to give up so a Private, who had just watched his own brother from the same squad die by the bullet of one of these farmers, took the initiative to burn the entire church down and all of the people inside as well. Since then, the Private had taken on the name Reverend Rhah. And now here he was, himself, inside of a church with his own enemies outside it. He laughed at the irony as he looked around at what remained of the shelled building.

He caught the sound of something to his right. It was inside. In fact, it was from the stairway which had taken them from the sewers up into the church (something that still perplexed the man). It had to be a fellow German?or maybe even just a mouse. Yes, perhaps a little church mouse. He chuckled to himself and approached the steps.

He peered down into the dark for a short time?waiting?yes, there was that scraping sound again.

?Wait.? Bad Brain said, holding out his hand to stop Corporal Gomezz from finishing his report, ?Did you hear that??

He peered over the edge of the bridge, down below, and saw some ripples in what was otherwise quiet water. Just then, the loud crack of rifles echoed off the surrounding buildings and Gomezz was spun around right next to Lieutenant Brain, who saw two holes in the side of the Corporal.

Private M3rryg0r0und, who was on the bridge with them, spun in circles, trying to figure out from where those shots had come. Bad Brain yelled at him to get down. Off to the left, just coming up the road, were Privates Blasphemy and Wewo. They had seen Gomezzz go down just in front of them, so they knew where the shots had to have started. They spun around the corner and Blasphemy shot the closest man twice in the chest. Wewo sprayed his BAR across the two of them and they saw both Germans fall into the water from the stairway which they had crept up.

Dutch?s group had just arrived at the boathouse when they heard the shots fired. Private Resistance rushed up the stairs, pulled the pin on a grenade, came around the corner, and tossed it towards the middle of the bridge.

The first shots had taken Private Quarantine completely by surprise. He was alone in a blown-out room overlooking the bridge with his rocket. He was supposed to be ready in the event that something happened, and the death of his Corporal definitely fell under that category. Blasphemy and Wewo had already dispatched those shooters though, but Quarantine did catch sight of a grenade thrown towards the bridge. He saw where it originated and took a snap-shot with his rocket in that direction. He would have been proud to know that he hit the German just as he popped out to toss another nade.

With nothing better to do at the moment, Reverand Rhah decided to go check out the noise. As he got to the bottom of the stairs suddenly something grabbed him by one, no...both, ankles.

One on each side of the stairway, Xiah and Stealth Fighter each grabbed one of the German?s legs and pulled it forward as hard as he could. Both of the man?s feet were suddenly airborne and it made his head come down and hit the concrete steps. Hard. The two Allied soldiers had no way of knowing that this had already killed the man, so they covered his mouth and slit his throat.

Suspecting that there might be more Germans up above, they were very slow in ascending the stairs, but it turns out that this one was alone. Right before them were stairs that went up to a hallway. From halfway up the stairs, they could see another doorway on the far end of the hall, and to their left and practically above them was a room with a ladder, which likely lead up to the sniper?s perch. They could have just continued up these stairs, but they did not want to assume that the sniper would not have set up a rear guard. After all, it was assumptions that had just gotten that German killed, was it not?

The plan was for Stealth Fighter to wait here while Xiah snuck around the other side of the church and found his way to this same hallway, but from the other entrance.

?You fool,? he thought to himself as he lay floating in the water, ?In feigning death you almost killed yourself.?

As soon as the two Americans came around the corner and pointed their guns at him, Fir3 knew he was a goner. In the same instant that they opened up, he grabbed Sumac?s jacket and pulled his squad leader to be in-between him and the oncoming bullets. At the same time, he fell off the stairway and into the water below. He wasn?t sure if he was lucky because he was not shot, or because he narrowly avoided hitting his head on the rocks below. Either way he was still alive.

On the other side of the water, his colleagues were not faring much better. There was a rocketeer somewhere in these buildings above him that was sending the periodic rocket at the boathouse. It was still holding up, for the moment, but they men inside didn?t really have anywhere they could run and be safe.

?Am I still alive?? Bad Brain asked, to nobody in particular. He remembered the grenade going off. That must have been why he was laying on the ground. As he opened his eyes, he saw PFC Olivares also on the ground, staring into his eyes. His shoulders and head were the only recognizable parts of him anymore. At least Brain assumed the rest of him could not be recognized, wherever it might be.

?Yes sir,? answered PFC Cheesequeso. ?For now anyways. You have a pretty bad head wound. We?re going to get you out of here though sir.?

Cheesequeso grabbed one arm while m3rryg0r0und grabbed the other, and they began to drag the Lieutenant off the bridge.

Quarantine saw the last of his friends leave the bridge and turned to head back to the beach himself. As soon as he turned around to go back down the stairs inside, he saw a German?D!ggo?at the bottom of them, rifle pointed up the stairs. By reflex, Quarantine pressed the fire switch and then dove to his left. When the smoke cleared, he got up and looked down what was left of the stairs at his handiwork.

?I think that took care of him?? Quarantine thought. He then jumped down the gap that used to be a staircase and outside to the waiting drop ships.

BOOM! sshhh-click-sshhht

Several minutes passed following Blue Stealth?s most recent shot.

?That is odd?nobody is moving. It?s too quiet. They haven?t even begun to organize any attempt to come after me or to leave. They?re just?staying put and hiding.? Blue thought to himself. This was very odd. It was foolish of his opponent to stay in the same place for too long.

It was foolish for anybody to stay in one place for too long.

Below him, Six maintained his ever-vigilant post. Most people couldn?t stand duties such as this, but he knew that he was watching the back of one of Germany?s finest killing machines. He heard footsteps from down the hall and gripped his rifle tighter. Suddenly an unarmed American reached the top of the stairs, turned the corner into the hallway, saw the armed German, and quickly dove back around the corner and raced down the steps. Six raced down the hall after him.

As he passed the stairway on the right, an alarm went off in his head, but he quickly ignored it. After all, there could be no threat from this direction?that was their fallback route, into the church, where more Germans waited. Just as quick as he went from a state of danger to a sense of safety, it quickly reversed as he lost his footing and sprawled face-first to the ground. He slid down the hall on his stomach and stopped just a few inches short of the wall.

He had stopped short of the wall, hadn?t he? Why did his head hurt then? He started to turn his head to the left and, in doing so, caught sight of the BAR coming down hard on his head for the second time.

Xiah continued bludgeoning the man with his gun until he heard cracking and saw blood pouring from the man?s skull. He could have shot the man, it would have been easier, but this German hadn?t taken a shot himself, so they knew that the sniper was still completely oblivious to their presence.

He met up with Stealth Fighter again, congratulating him on the quick move that tripped the man up in the first place, sending him sliding on his belly like a baby penguin on ice. Xiah then pulled out a grenade, pulled out the pin, held it for a count of six, and threw it straight up through the hole above.

It was timed so perfectly, the sniper didn?t even have time to react?to maybe kick it away or throw it aside. As soon as it was up in the tower it blew, easily encompassing the entire sniper?s nest, but not doing enough damage to ruin the integrity of the tower itself. Xiah and Stealth Fighter climbed the ladder to the top, having to see the damage done themselves.

They got to the top and saw?well?nothing. There was nobody up here. Where the hell had he gone? They had maintained watch over the ladder since well before the last shots were fired from up here.

They radioed Boyle an All-clear, and he assessed the damage on the ground. The sniper had managed to kill eight of his men out here, starting with Bigbas and ending with Private Norian. Both of them were two of his best young soldiers. The most disconcerting part of all of this, however, was the report that nobody knew what happened to the sniper and where he might be now.
His thoughts were interrupted by a frantic message practically yelled over the radio. The entire right flank had been crushed and what was left was falling back to the boats. He decided to do the same with his men before they, too, were overran by more Germans.

When Boyle got back to the beach he demanded to see First Lieutenant Bad Brain. He had to know every detail of what else had happened to his men from the bridge. He was instead met by PFC Cheesequeso.

?Where is the Lieutenant?? Boyle demanded.

?Sir?a grenade went off right by him. He took a bunch of flak from it.? Cheesequeso reported, ?We got him out of there but the head injury and brain damage was just too much for us here?he didn?t make it.?

?I see?? Boyle said. ?Corporal Gomezzz??

?Sir, he was the first to go when we got flanked. They had us from three sides, sir. Fortunately we were still a little spread out at the time. Lieutenant Brain actually heard them down below. Had he not?we would have probably all been goners.? Cheesequeso had to find some good in all that had happened.

?Thank you PFC.? Boyle said to him, and then looked around at the buildings above them before he addressed everybody as a whole, ?Let?s get off this beach.?

Then got back in the landing boats and started back for the ships.

Back at the church, sitting on the roof, leaning up against the tower, Blue Stealth sat finishing slicing eight more notches in the side of his rifle. He had been out here the whole time Xiah and Stealth Fighter spent on the radio while still up in the tower just above him. He had not even waited for them to take out his rear guard before he dropped down to the roof and began to add the new kill marks. He stopped only long enough to shield his head from the explosion ten feet above his head when it happened.

Then, when the Americans started back down the ladder, just eight inches of brick and mortar away, he began to clean his rifle and whistle the German Military March.

Dum?dee-dum?doo-dum-da-da-da-dum?

Good at watching the team's 6 o'clock yet failing at stairs. Darn.

Another great tale YoSpank.....it would been even better if i wasnt dead ;)

Awww:( It doesn't says what happens to me when we come out of the sewer exit and i go east down the road:(

hahah blue is fat if i can run faster then him :P

Well think about it...you guys were not even as far as the "mid" stairway. That means...you were pretty much within spitting distance of your sewer exit from the start, lol.

In fact, as I wrote it, I pictured Blue's team moving off down the tunnels and then you telling your men to pack up and move out...which would have consisted of picking up a rifle...standing up...walking a few steps...and then setting it back down. lol

Awww:( It doesn't says what happens to me when we come out of the sewer exit and i go east down the road:(

Lol then I guess you didn't die! Several people were "in" the Normandy one and not even mentioned, so consider yourself lucky!

Excellent story Yo. I just feel bad that I left men behind.:(
