Benchmarking Thread!

some of these results really surprise me. like how phobus can beat me in 06 but is a bunch lower on this test, and how mad pistol can beat me in dirt2 but not this etc etc and theres a lot of other differences like that

interesting

That's because there are multiple variables that must be accounted for and each benchmark will lean towards certain strengths. 3dmark06 tries to take into account the whole system and more powerful processors will benefit from that. In general, the i5 will bench higher than the PII but in games the benefit is much less apparent simply because both chips can handle everything the game will throw at it.

As for you and mad pistol, I'm calling a mixture of shenanigans between Dirt 2's inconsistent bench and Heaven's tesselation.

ya i updated the drivers, upped my cpu OC to 3.6ghz and changed the setting to application based tess and ran it again, here is the result...lost a hand full of points

I'm posting what I got dude. That's all I'm doing. Nothing more, nothing less.

My GPU has that nice little "bug" where if the temperature gets too low at idle, it starts showing green pixel artifacts. That may explain some of the inconsistent performance results. Other than that, I have no clue what's going on.

Also, this bench is completely GPU dependent. My CPU usage in Heaven is something like 10-15%. This is why overclocking your CPU yields no difference. What you're seeing isn't raw polygons. It's a function of the tessellator on the GPU. Therefore, there is little to no CPU usage on this test since EVERYTHING is being accelerated on the GPU.

Is it possible that my GPU is going out? I guess that's my fault for running dual screen mode 24/7 except for when I run a benchmark.

If you'd like, I can cheat, and turn off tessellation completely through the driver. That would give me a higher score. How about I do that instead?

I can confirm that this benchmark is in no way cpu limited.

I'm curious if you get the same artifacts when you are running at stock clocks -- as you do have a pretty good overclock on that card. I don't see how running dual screens can have anything to do with it. Granted it will keep your idle clocks higher, but it still shouldn't be very warm. I run 3x 24/7 on this end. For the benchmark I turned off the sides and only ran the middle off of the displayport.

heh... I think I just figured out why the score in Dirt2 is so much higher.

Almost a year ago, I forced DX9 in Dirt 2 to see if there was a difference in framerate (via a config file) Guess what? I never set it back to DX11. :O It's only now that I've been testing the tessellation controls in driver that I noticed it. It was pretty odd that tessellation was making no difference in Dirt 2 performance. Now I know why. No wonder my framerate was stupidly high in Dirt 2. I thought I had a magical card or something.

EDIT: Re-ran the benchmark in DX11 mode for Dirt 2. Please update the score: http://www.edgegamers.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1717980&postcount=553 <- I'm still in 2nd place for Dirt 2.

And to think... all this time, I've been playing Dirt 2 in DX9 mode. It looks a lot better now. :P

JunK is right behind you with a 5850 -- did your score really drop that much?

It dropped by about 10 FPS on Dirt 2

The visuals more than make up for it though.

Once again, I'm sorry guys, I had no idea DX9 was being forced in Dirt 2.

Whoops. That was taken at 1920x1200. This is the correct benchmark (DX11) at 1680x1050, 4xaa, ultra settings.

It made a 3 FPS difference between DX9 and DX11. Go figure.

Guess I'll keep my spot on the leader boards afterall. :P

My only explanation for this one is that the HD 5850 and 5870 has a lot of raw polygon horsepower. The tessellation used in Dirt 2 is very minimal. That's why these cards do so well in Dirt 2. And of course, the 5870 is going to beat the 5850 on raw performance.

As for the Heaven benchmark, I'm speechless. I can't break JunK's score for some reason, at least at stock driver settings... now, if I turn tessellation down via the driver... :P

well im only 15 points higher than you on the heaven bench, and its probs cause my clocks are higher. im running my 5850 at 1000/1300 while your 5870 is 960/1300. thats the only thing i can think of, since the cpu is a non issue on this bench, where as your cpu definitely helps you out in dirt2 against my own.

My PSU sounded like it was going to die during the benchmark. It stopped a few times and i could hear it stutter

I like these settings much better. First time I ran it I got 10fps avg. Then I installed 11.2, OC'd and used these lower settings. Getting about 30. Fricken sweet.

Maybe it's your crap PSU.

That doesn't seem right. What drivers were you using before?

I bet if i whipped out the Celeron 326, my score would be a lot lower. :thumbup1:
