My buddy just bought DOD under the amazing offering currently going on through steam. Unfortunately, he can play the game except his computer has issues whenever a smoke grenade is lit off. DOD has no issues on his computer until a smoke grenade is in his view.

Should I recommend that he lower his video settings in-game, or is there another fix (with the exception of a new comp)?

Tweaking the settings can help. Lower resolution, no AA and antialias, etc. Also, look at running in dx7. And make sure you are up to date on drivers on video card.

If their fps is dropping in smoke then their fps probably isn't very high to begin with. Use net_graph 1 to get their fps before and after smoke. If it's 200 before and 20 after, there's something wrong with game files or graphics drivers. If it's like 45>20 then lowering settings may help. A new graphics card won't help a CPU bottleneck and vice versa, so try software changes at first. Ask them to update their graphics card drivers, as well. Forcing DX7 will largely get rid of smoke but will draw suspicion when you start shooting through it (we notice). You'll also lose a couple nice looking things.

I experienced this kind of issue before every time I played on my laptop (nvidia geforce go 6150) I tried to solve it by setting a low resolution and minimum settings but things didn't improve as i expected. Finally i get used to it and played avoiding smoke grenades, lol, sad but true.
Solved it with a new video card for my desktop. Based in my experience. If you need advice buying a new video card go to Toms Hardware they've got a list based on the best bang for the buck for each month.

Hope this helps you.

Upgrade the video card, or lower all settings on EVERYTHING and hope for the best.
