Name that bottleneck!

Hey all. So here's the deal. I play bad company 2 quite a bit, however I can't get a good fps (hovers right at 30 on medium settings.) Resolution is 1440x900, my monitor's native. I want to use fraps to record gameplay, but when I do, my fps suffers horribly (hovers 5-10 fps) which is of course unplayable. Now, this graphics card (amd radeon 5770) should be able to easily max this game out, especially at this resolution. I need help finding the bottleneck that is limiting my performance, and if possible a solution to this.

I believe it to be my processor, and I'm looking at (socket type lga 775) the quadcore Q8300 or the Q9550.

My specs:
Pentium Dual Core E5200
AMD Radeon 5770 HD
4gigs RAM at 800mhz (slow I know)
500gb hard drive...that's all I think you guys need to know.

Any and all help would be MUCH appreciated!

It's the CPU. Get the Q8300, and try overclocking it if you can.
 
It's your CPU bro

If anything make sure CPU is close to price range of GPU and vice versa if you are wary of bottlenecking.
 
Alright, thanks guys. I'll probably need some help with OCing when the time comes, I don't think my mobo's BIOS lets me mess with fsb and clock settings...
 
I can give you a good price for my Q9550 with an aftermarket HSF. PM if your interested. Oh and FRAPs will be bad FPS regardless, unless you have a few SSDs on RAID 0
 
None of those are really a problem.

It isn't a bottleneck, It is your processor not being good enough for the game, although I have an athlon II X2, and it runs it fine.

And fraps will do that, It likes to eat FPS.

TL:DR: DON'T use fraps

I would bet that his motherboard is bottlenecking his graphics card quite a bit.

ya with fraps you essential rendering every frame twice once to the framebuffer and once to your harddrive so it requires a cpu and gpu that can keep up with the extra demand and because it is uncompressed video your going to want raid0 some 10,000rpm drives or ssd's

im a bit lucky i got a bunch of 10,000 rpm drives in raid0 since i need very fast simultaneous read and write speeds for my job.
 
So, any other ideas for (preferably free) good gameplay recorders, if fraps is all that bad?

@Blue, I might eventually be getting a whole new system, with case, mobo, cpu, etc, but that's in the 3-4 year future, like uni or something. Not much I can do about a mobo bottleneck at the moment. Thanks though, didn't think of it.

record at a lower res

the end video will still look good at a lower res it will just be smaller

try recording in 720p 1280x720 instead of your monitors native.
