I seem to be in a minority here, but I love the silly hats. It adds to the whacky factor that TF2 really shines in.
If I want gritty brown "realism" I've got plenty of games to play. If I want to blow people (who are poor and also Irish) up with blue sparkle crockets while wearing a towering pile of hat, I have an excellent hat simulator to do so in.

Funny you should mention that... there's actually one guy in the picture who has taken his hat off to the photographer. But only one.
