Looking to upgrade CPU

Hey guys, I'm looking to upgrade my CPU up to a quad-core, i have 2 choices in mind but socket types are worrying me. All i know is mine is a AM2 socket, I've heard that AM2 will work with AM2+ and with a bios update AM3 but i dont wanna spend alot( no job yet) n it not work.

Would either of these be an issue? I don't really have alot to spend. I have upgraded it before. Corsair 400W PSU 30amps and a sapphire 4670

your psu will be more than enough, your board might be a problem.

Only some boards work with am3 CPU's, so i would play it safe, and stick with am2/am2+ CPUs

If you want to play it safe, buy a am2 5000+ cpu.

You could try a am3 CPU, but I cant say for 100% that it will work.

ahh thats a bummer cause i was hoping for a quad-core for newer games and prolly make BFBC2 more enjoyable

I wouldn't be too bummed about not getting the Quad-core. It's been proven that most games don't fully utilize all four cores, if they're even using multiple cores at all. The extra cores are mostly there to help with multitasking.

bc2 on a dual core is painful

@op, you could always get a cheap motherboard that supports an x4

I'm just recalling that thread, and it basically said going overboard on cores isn't too important. I suppose four cores is becoming middle of the road though, huh?

I'm going to echo what reflex99 said; BC2 on a dual core is painful (especially after you've played it with a good Quad core setup.)

An e8400 overclocked to 4Ghz can't touch a Phenom II Quad Core @ 3Ghz. Seriously, the difference in framerate and game play experience is nothing short of amazing.

Anyone that is doing a new gaming build I always recommend a quad core CPU. Since more and more games/programs are taking advantage of them, you will see the benefits of those extra couple of cores shortly. Those benefits are nothing short of amazing when a program is written correctly.

I just built a new rig today using a i5 760 (quad) with an MSI H57M (link), 4 GB ram, and 9800GT. Runs smoooth. My jaw hit the floor when I booted that game up the first time.

I'm coming from an Athlon 3500+ though... heh, so I have no dual core cpu experience to compare.
