For the past few months CS:S has ran flawlessly.Never crashing or anything.

But that soon changed...

Out of know where about a couple days ago a strange error started popping up.

When I boot up CS:S it runs fine.I start to join a server and it does fine.

I can play in the server and everything.

For some reason though every time I press ~ or the ext button the game freezes. As it freezes an error pops up with this:

applicationerror.png

I have no clue why this has started happening.I defragged the game and everything and stuff.Though I'd prefer not to have to uninstall the game since my internet isn't the greatest.

It downloads at 100KB/s speed so it's decent but not great for having to install a 4-5GB game.

So if anybody can help me with this it will be greatly appreciated since I love this game and don't want to have this issue bother me forever.

Specs:

Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3
3.20 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4
2048 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory
NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT

The only changes I have really done in the past 2-3 days is modding out Fallout 3.

It could a number of things to be honest.

Whatever modding you did to CS:Source or the Source engine could be causing issues with the process. I would backup what you did, and then remove all the mods.

Other than that, it could be one of two things:

1. Your CS:Source files are corrupted. I would run the cache integrity check first, and then if that does not help, reinstall the game. I can understand that it would be a pain in the butt with a slow/crappy internet connection, but it just might be time to reinstall the game.

2. Very unlikely, but you could have memory issues on your computer. Try running memtest86+ for about 24 hours and see if any errors pop up with your system memory. Again, I highly doubt this is the problem.

Where did that come from? He modified Fallout 3, not CS:S or the engine it runs on.

Anyways, more than likely, you'll have to reinstall, Nick. I've had this happen probably 20 times by now, and reinstalling CS:Source was the only way I managed to fix it each time.

Reinstalling the game is the best option in terms of trying to quickly diagnose the issue. If the issue continues, then you may want to do a memory test - your ram may have gone bad.

I suppose I'll just have to reinstall it.I'll do it while I'm a sleep or so.I'll post back to say if it worked or not.

Thanks anyways guys :).

Well I uninstalled it and I'm reinstalling it but instead of having 4-5GB of downloading it only has to download 1600MB now.So does that mean it keeps the updated stuff and what not to your computer?I'm just curious to knowing this.

I believe CSS also uses components from hl2 which may explain the size discrepancy.

When you download a game initially you download .gcf (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/GCF) files that unpack into the game's folder and respective files. If you 'delete' a game, you'll remove the program from your computer but not the .gcf files that originally held all that data.

Ah I see.I had a feeling that that was the case.Hopefully though just reinstalling it will make the crashing go away.If that's not the case I'll remove it all to make sure theres no issue.

Unfortunately uninstalling the game didn't help the issue.I reinstalled it and everything and tried it out.Same problem occurs.

Now heres some insight:

I can join the server I want and it boots and I get to choose what team I want to join.I can use the ~ button and the exit button but once I join a T or CT and then I press the same buttons it crashes or even freezes in some cases which REALLY sucks since I have to reboot everything.

So now I'm going to try something else.

Edit:

Just finished Verifying Integrity of Cache files and even after that it failed.

So I guess ultimately I'll just have to remove it all.So can somebody tell me how I can wipe the entire game off my computer?I'll just let it download over night.

Anyways I managed to get the entire source crap off so now it's time to let it download over night and I'll see if it works tomorrow after school.

Wish me luck guys..hopefully it works then.

Cheers! Hopefully it's an easy fix for ya!

Well I uninstalled it completely off and reinstalled it.Well I tried it out and the same conclusion. It continues to crash.

Does anybody know how to fix this? This is really ticking me off.

Emmm, try the following at Valve's support page:

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?p_faqid=278

If no fix, contact Valve support directly. They produce the game, they would know of any and all fixes, certainly better than even many of us here.

Also I don't know if this would be applicable but for you to check regardless:

I'll try the console method.

Also I tried the original Counter-Strike and it doesn't crash.I seriously don't understand how Counter-Strike:Source just randomly started crashing for me.

It makes NO sense what so ever.

Well it's still occuring but I have some info that may help the issue.

I deleted a folder in the steamapp area called cstrike_thai.I assume that file was there when I had my Language set to Thai on Counter-Strike:Source which why it was set to that?I don't know.

Though it worked perfectly fine on it.Though for some reason ever since I changed the language back to English I started having this crashing issue.

Now is it possible that is the problem I am having and that I should go back to the Thai Language?

I'll go try it.

Oh and that reminds me ever since I deleted that folder the game doesn't pop up with an error anymore. It immediately closes off and I'm back to my web browser or whatever I had opened before.

Could I of just solved my issue?I have no idea..yet.

Thats so funny really. Now that I switched my language back to Thai it works PERFECT NOW.

Can anybody PLEASE and I mean PLEASE explain to me why this has occured? This is probably the strangest thing that has happened to me in a LONG time in gaming...

Edit:

Scratch all of that.NOW I have a new problem...

I have this issue now instead of Application Error popping up.Also it continues to crash with out popping an error.

Now I get the HL2.exe errors so I really don't understand this at all..It works and then it doesn't work.

It happened to me without warning.

What error are you getting now? As I have a fix for many connection and crashing errors that JUST might work. Works for me!

I'm receiving HL2.exe errors now.I do the same steps that happened to me when getting Application Errors but now it's HL2.exe errors instead.

Well for whatever reason it works now.I managed to uninstall map packs and any other files I had been getting from servers and now it works fine.Shows that I had a corrupted file or some thing.

Anyways thanks for your help guys :)
