I have heard some good things about the Caviar Black but I see the Samsung F3 recommended more often. Might just be because it's about $15 less though.

That, and it's only slightly less fast. It's only noticeable in HD Tune or other HDD benchmarks.

what about a hybrid hdd/ssd for xmas? or a straight up ssd if you already have a regular hdd
From what I have read about the hybrids and other sdds, I would give it a little longer until you go that direction as they are still quite expensive. The caviar black is an awesome drive. In my honest opinion I think you will be satisfied with it.

I've had that drive for around 1 and a half years now. 750GB full and no issues yet. I find it more than fast enough. That said, I don't have any experience with other 1TB drives.

When it comes to a drive that is used purely for archiving (photography and cinematography), fast enough is pretty easy to meet.
At the time I bought it it was the top performing 1TB drive for the cost IIRC. I got it on sale too. I don't know where it falls now a days. I was just answering the question of "is this a good hard drive?"

Cause I don't know enough about it. I haven't been in the market for a 1TB hard drive for a year and a half. All I know is that the hard drive he was asking about it indeed a good quality, fast hard drive. Fastest and best value, I dunno, seems like it's aged. Still a solid drive nonetheless.
