I seem to recall that the use of binds for admin is discouraged by some divisions. One problem is that if you accidentally press the bind key when no one is using bad language it can cause confusion. Better to take the time to type it out. Personalize it and keep it friendly. It means more that way.

This man speaks the truth... Probably rules have changed since I was an admin tho.

I agree with you Blitz, but i also think that each scenario depends on the context. I think i am known for using colorful words like: chump, chumpette, and jerkface. However, i only use these terms of endearment on members who know me and who know i dont mean to insult them.

Stormy is actually known for a lot more other words too.

I been with ego over 2 years and was taught from the beginning that when it comes to language, admin like your grandmother or child is in the server - there is no need for foul langauge or racial slurs or any type - sure people slip up or don't know the rules at first - thats why we warn and then proceed with kick etc. - most players after a warning understand and keep playing and rather enjoy a server where they can come play and language and spamming is under control. my 2 cents

There is nothing wrong with being competitive, but when you start personally attacking someone or using very aggressive language or racial slurs, game over.

Then there are those situations where you are like "wtf just happened there" because of an amazingly weird game-play situation, and it's all in good fun, not even so much trash talking.

I know several Gay and Lesbian friends in RL who find it offensive, but I also know a few who use it just like a lot people to say, "Man, that's so gay!" Some might take the term to be offensive, but others use it in a more modern / urban context in which it does not hold its homosexual condemnation. I know it is not the most academic of sources, but, even Wikipedia has troubles with this term: "In the Anglosphere, this connotation, among younger speakers, has a derisive meaning equivalent to rubbish or stupid (as in "That's so gay."). In this use the word does not mean "homosexual", so it can be used, for example, to refer to an inanimate object or abstract concept of which one disapproves."

What is the judgment of the higher-ups on this specific word, and word use? Is it up to the admin to gauge the context in which the word is being used?

I understand what you're saying but I think the problem is, even if someone in-game says it without genuine homophobic intent, some pubs might not realize that. I think the point is, as long as there is a chance that someone might be (reasonably) offended by the word/phrase, it should not be allowed. Hence the word should not be used (in an expression of disdain or frustration) in our servers.

Yes, I agree Skippy, hence why I brought it up. Although one might not mean for the use of a certain word, Gay for example, to be used in an upsetting or offensive manner it is possible, and I have seen personally, how the use of said word can create a hostile environment to anyone who may be offended by the use of the word, in either of its modern contexts.

^would be EPIC if they really just can't remember the rules. Just force it upon them before or after you kick them, to remind them the rules are obviously posted as you enter the server.

but nah. that would never happen with the amount of admins we have, even if SM does support it. Too much risk of someone going rogue and messing up someones config. =p

It is a fine line sometimes in the making of our rules, especially when it comes to profanity. "Gay" and "Rape", for example can be used without any bad connotations, but due to the potential misuse of these words, we do not allow them on our servers.
I learned as a kid that rules are often made for bad people and that good people would always suffer restrictions because of a few immature jerks! So be it, eGO rules are our boundaries.

Luckily, unlike many rules, ours are primarily dictated by common sense, so this problem is minimized as long as there's an admin with common sense around. But then, how many of us have that?

Hey Im new here but I thought I'd just post on the subject. As a new player I think I've done pretty well to be respectful to every single player which is something I've had to work on. On the other hand I've noticed some =(e)= members, new or not, slipping the rules through their fingers and although I will not list names, I think everyone needs to hold to these standards, otherwise why have them. Just thought I'd say my peace. :thumbup1:
