Alright ladies and gentleman, so I'm fairly new to TF2, and I have one question in particular that hopefully you guys can answer. What are all these hats im hearing about, im just in the process of understanding items and crates and all that and now theres hats?! I mean god, when does it end!

Are you mad? The hats are greater than your life, my life or a polar bears life! For as the bible of TF2 says, "Thou shalt weareth hats", we must obey!

hats have been there for a pretty long time :P you can find them, craft them or buy them. if you buy them you cant trade them unless you wrap them with gift wrap. but you have to buy gift wrap as well.
if you see vintage hats it means those hats were crafted or found before the polycount update. same goes for the weapons. vintage weapons and hats are worth more than non vintage stuff. and polycount weapons are worth more than normal weapons as well.
crates are some kind of pain. the only way to open a crate is with a key from the store. a key costs 2.49 so its pretty expensive to open a crate. of course you can unbox a hat or even an unusual hat. but the chances to get some crappy stuff are high. you can also trade for a key. the normal price is 1 refined but you will always find ppl who want more for it.
theres more to say i think but i dont want to confuse you lol.
if you have more question just post them or add me on steam.

Hats are your life force and an excellent way to judge someone as a person. If they have more hats than you then they are probably just a better person than you. You should get on their level.

When one gets all the weapons their drive for more items remains so hats were introduced to be rarer and desirable. Hats are purely cosmetic, or at least they were. Presently five have an effect on gameplay. For more information read up on items sets.

Oh and crates that come from hats are generally worth a lot less since there is a lot more of them. Luckily Valve recently put a few set hats in crates, finally making owning them all feasible for new players.
