I have had a few to drink, and after talking to a few of my friends tonight I'd like to share this with you. Please excuse the grammar, as I've had a few to drink 
To those of you with a life plan, who are currently about to get their degree in 3 years ? I applaud you. The below is dedicated to those that we both know. The people who seem to be coasting through everything, the people who seem to not care either about anything. Those are the people that this is written for, and I hope you understand that.
So you are rich, or you aren't rich, but you are difintaley not poor. When Christmas rolls around you always have presetns under the tree. You went or are going to high school, and college is just the next logical step in your life. You have never been shot at, try not to go in the inner-cities. Your life hasn't been handed to you, but it sure as hell wasn't a struggle. Where do you fit in? You are the middle-class to upper-middle-class people, who will continue on to college.
Once you are in college, you won't be worried about a job. At least not to pay for school, you might have a job to pay for you beer money, but even most of that is given to you by your parents one way or another. You live in the dorms, enjoy yourself. Maybe you play a ton of videogames, maybe you drink a lot of alcohol. Maybe you are the quintessential middle-class student who decides so smoke a bunch of weed. Either way, you may be a part of today's problem. Today's problem has to do with middle-class children, and their entrance into college.
It wasn't hard, just another piece of paper you had to fill out in-route to the rest of your lives. You did not realize the journey many other people went through just to be where you are ? and why would you? Your parents took care of everything, you just kind of tagged along. Tagged along in your own life. You did not realize how many people fight tooth and nail to get into college, to make their lives better than what they grew up with. You barely go to classes, but when you do you do well. This is because you had a great earlier education that allows you to flourish, if you try.
The problem with today's middle-class is that they are lazy. Yes, I will say it ? they are lazy. There may be plenty of you out there who work hard, but you are being out numbered by the majority. The kids who got everything they ever asked for, and even then, it wasn't enough. Maybe the television you got wasn't big enough, maybe you didn't get enough at the holidays. Unfortunately, you are taking up spots on college campuses across the country of people who want it, need it, more.
Its kind of sad, considering I am one of the lazy middle-class students. I have been in college for seven years, and yet I still have no real desire to go to class, to graduate. I am perfectly happy enjoying my surreal existence as a college student with no real responsibilities. I enjoy not having to wake up at a certain time, not having a real schedule that I need to abide by. I have met many people in my seven years of higher education who have worked their butts off, trying to make a name for themselves or just graduate. These are the true collegiate products.
I have heard from almost every news outlet about how America as a whole has become dumber, lazier, have they? I'd say that the majority of people in the middle-class may be following this trajectory, but I have met many people who are the most intelligent, hard working of any field. Sure, you may say, I know or am a middle-class student who strives to be the best and has done so. To you, I say congratulations. You have made the jump, from spoiled to deserved. Unfortunately there are many others who are giving you a bad name.
I really do think that when middle-class students are in high school, they need to be talked to. Not about what college they want to go to, but what they want to do with their lives. I blame the students, but I also blame the parents. No one discusses with them what they really want to do. If they want to become a mechanist, they are instead pushed into a four year university where they will probably slack off and do nothing until the money runs out. This is, unfortunately, the way that America works today. Don't get me wrong, I am not above this, I preferred to play videogames 24/7 while I was in college. I also had parents that let me do this ? taking up spots of people who would have gotten not only a bachelor degree ? but an advanced degree in the same time I attended school.
What I hope for anyone who reads this, is to understand a few things. First off ? school is not the next step in your life, it is a privilege to those who want higher learning to be a part of your life. No one is forcing this onto you. If you do not know what you want to do with your life at the end of high school, become a cook at a fast food restaurant. Go become a roofer. A few months at these jobs should at least show you that you want higher education in your life. A second thing to consider, is that you should not be attending college without an idea of what you would like to do in the future. Go ahead, take some community college credits (affordable with your fast food or roofing job ? or even better with your parents paying) in classes that you think might interest you.
In regards to everyone who decided ? hey I couldn't go away to school, I'm going to go to the community college around the block. Get your own apartment, even if it is one hundred feet away from your parents. Get that experience right away, hey you're 18, act like it!. You see most of your friends moving away, and you think - ?Hey, I'll just chill at my mom and dad's place for the next few years while getting my degree? - not cool! The problem here is that you will never properly think for yourself, never learn how to do the simplest things like pay a bill.
All I am doing is asking each and everyone of you ? are you ready? Do you have a plan? Do you have a REASON for going to school? If you can't say yes to any of the previous questions, then please don't go. You will inevitable fill up somebody's more deserving spot, or never grow beyond a senior in high school.
