Computer+ dry ice=win

What are the potential long term issues with putting your computer in vegetable oil? Other than voiding your warranty on your hardware.

I'm thinking of doing this to make my computer silent.

There isn't really anything special you have to do other than just drop your computer into mineral oil. The link above is a good one.

They have been running a computer for several years in mineral oil and the fans/parts are still running strong.
 
You NEED to circulate that oil, or else it would not transfer heat causing overheating. The more wattage (the more powerful components) you dump into it, the more it needs to be circulated. Ph?bus is completely right, you need to sacrifice power for silence, changing the medium of which the heat is dissipated into will not change that.
 
seems pointless to do this cant be used for any real life work so just useless wast of money and time and a possible CPU if something goes wrong.

the vegetable oil idea can cause more damage in the end since if you leave your setup running all day and night like most people the oil will eventually reach it's full heat capacity and stop cooling things and actually insulate them after that point.

so the only way for that to work is if oil was actually recycled and cooled.

i thought that would be the obvious.

You should always think about an "If" factor when doing these kind of things.
If something went wrong, and You had to replace everything, would You have enough money for that?

It's been done, check this out. Granted its a P4 processor, but still if you could apply that to current CPUs, then that'd be GG.

I'll take your P4 at 5.1GHz and raise a Phenom II x4 at 7GHz.

I did do real work, I calculated 1 million digits of Pi, and today I calculated 32 million prime numbers.

And the possiblity of killing hardware is there, but I don't really like to think about that.:thumbup1:

Puget had their oil system running for 2 years without major problems. Albeit, they added a radiator, but that isn't that hard to do.

only 5.1 on a p4? that is pretty weak. On Dry Ice people can usually get 6GHz at least. Those things are like tanks, you can put 2.2v through them, and they will still be fine.

Current World record for 775, is on a Celeron D @8.2GHz

Current WR for i3/i5/i7 is 7.3GHz on a i5 655K

Current WR on AM3 is 7.3GHz on a Phenom II 975.

AMD CPUs don't exhibit a cold bug, so you can boot them as cold as you want. Intel on the other hand, wont even post if it is too cold.

I got my coveted 5.5GHz today. Should be able to validate it soon

If you want a silent computer just do liquid cooling. It's a lot less radical and a lot easier to do.
 
and the point of calculating million prime number and calculating pi is both have already been done and the info can be found if needed.

like i said there is no real world use for it since it would be too costly or run or just screw up work-flow trying to keep it maintained. and it is just a hugely wasteful process all along anyways in money and risk of broken hardware.

There is no real world use.

It is for fun. It is a competition.

I like to draw a parallel to sports like baseball. There is no point, it is a total waste of money, and does not produce anything, but it is still fun, and that makes it worth it.

You are just mad because Linux can't bench as well as Windows. XD

I hate locked BIOSes. All the OCing software fails me too. Time for a new computer!
 
I love my bios, MSI did a real good job on the GD80.

BUT I CAN't FIND THE DAMN UNCORE!!!!!1
