Do we have any Graphic Design artists who do their thing as a job, whether as a freelance artist or as a company? I'd like to become a graphic design artist as a career over the next few years and I'd like to know what I have to do to become one.

Yeah i think we have some, not many. I think TomsSound is a graphic designer, you can try talking to him

I have been for over 6 years. Before you even consider becoming a graphic designer you should know the difference between graphic design and art.

The best advice I could give you is; if you definitely want to be a graphic designer of some sort then go for it. Don't pick a degree in something else and try and do freelance work on the side because you'll miss out on a lot of important lessons and, more importantly, connections within industry. Apply for the best university you can and work your butt off.

I have an article you should read also to give you an idea of how hard it is to be a moderately successful graphic designer (15k-20k a year).

I was looking to get a degree in graphic design, since I've been doing it for the better part of 2 years (just making sigs and stuff) and I love it.
I'd love to read that article if you don't mind, Thanks.

Been doing Gfx Art for about 5 years, but just started working on a 4-6 year degree in Visiual arts (3d/visual animation, graphic and Web design, rotoscoping, storyboarding, special effects, lighting, Open GL and 3D coding, et cetera. Also some film production). Best advice I can give: Work your butt off. The more you work, the better you get. Better your get the more option open up to you.

Also, from personal experience, avoid those so called "Art institutes." %90 of them are all owned by the same company and are nothing more than money-holes. You can get the same level of education, sometimes even better, at a local college or university.

u have to be dedicated to doing art in order to be succesful or else it wont work

Dedication isn't enough.

You have to be the absolute best of the best if you want to succeed.

Unfortunately because of the economy, businesses are pushing employees to the limit and the skill requirements have certainly become much more advanced. I am currently a creative developer, and my best recommendation is if your taking the graphic design route is to learn basic coding such as HTML, CSS, Javascript and JQuery. It is a good fall back

Indeed. Which is why I chose Visual arts. Covers a Wide range of things. From 3d Animation, Particle effects, Open GL and 3d Code (LUA, Python, C++ and a few others), Special Effects, Concept Art, Web Design and Code (HTML, Flash, Java), Photography, Story-boarding, Concept art, Advertisement (Commercials, movie previews, marketing ads, etc), to Film Production in some cases and a few more. *whew*

I'd also like to get a 2year degree in Computer Hardware Engineering, just in case :)

I will probably just do advertising, and maybe later on start up again on the graphic design.
