Manual (stick) or Automatic

I want to learn stick very, very, extremely bad. It is hard to find a car that still has it, and then actually finding the time for someone to teach me. Hope to learn this summer so I can race (legally). I'm very interested in expanding my limited knowledge of engine performance and driving skills.
I just got my permit, so I kind of suck.
The summer after this one I want to go work in car performance shop. Not a career, just a hobby I am getting pulled into.

I drive stick, and stick only. Automatic is just not for me :3.

Stick is really easy and almost every car that is raced is stick. What are you racing? Dirt track? Asphalt? For example
1st gear - 0 -15
2nd gear - 15 - 25
Or you can shift between 2000 and 2500 RPM.
I've drove late models, pure stocks, and IMCA modifieds.

Im 12 , so I prefer automatic on my Camaro, on need for speed hot pursuit

I prefer Stick (Manual). The last two trucks I have owned were stick shift and I just can't go back to Automatic. Had to take my ex-girlfriends car on a trip last year (automatic) and I always tried to shift. Good thing she had the Manu-matic transmission where you can shift gears without the clutch.
I learned to drive stick by my buddy putting me on the steepest hill in town and then telling me to go up the rest of the way. Much easier after I did that.

I know it is easy to understand, and I know how to do it, but have no practical experience.:facewall:
I will probably try asphalt. I know no one who does it, and have no connections in the industry. I don't like the NASCAR type stock cars, more like mod cars. I REALLY want to start doing it.
Note that not all Sticks have a tachometer! *Mine doesnt!* So sometimes you must learn w/o the tach. but im sure its easier that way. Its really not too hard Gibso, and it takes some practice. But if you understand the legist of it its kinda simple. Funny how many people in this day in age dont know how. :laugh: but its cool that you are wanting to learn!
I didn't like stick at first, but then I got used to it and it is so much more fun than just putting the gas in. And you can usually pull out some extra speed to beat that automatic off the line. Burnouts are easier, drifting is easier, and it gives you something to do with your hands. OMG GREAT IDEA, It's cold outside, so why not make a heated shift knob *gets to work*.

Note that not all Sticks have a tachometer! *Mine doesnt!* So sometimes you must learn w/o the tach. but im sure its easier that way. Its really not too hard Gibso, and it takes some practice. But if you understand the legist of it its kinda simple. Funny how many people in this day in age dont know how. :laugh: but its cool that you are wanting to learn!
Driving by feel is oldschool, lol. Helps to be able to do it nonetheless.
I know right! I wouldnt decline an offer for a tach though...:glare:

I think I could probably pick up manual driving much easier this time around. I had just gotten my license the last time my dad shoved me behind his truck.
I kind of got the hang of it, but my inexperience made me way too nervous and I dropped it. Now that I've been driving for about two years straight, (didn't get my full license for like two years after my beginners.), it should almost be second nature.
But I do not mind automatic, obviously.

Stick is great, but a sensitive manual transmission can be extremely annoying in NYC metro area 'stop and go' rush hour traffic. Western Long Island, especially when you get nearer and nearer to Queens and brooklyn, has some of the most congested roads in the united states.
All the freeways and especially the parkways were designed for FAR less use than the amount of people currently using them. (Why no one has done much expansion on them in 35 years+ is anyone's guess around here)
I prefer automatic for a more comfortable daily drive in my cars. I do a lot of driving, and I mean A LOT. a stick shift is great for you do have a feeling of being in-tuned/in control of your vehicle a bit better.

Most kids don't know because the option of getting a manual is more than getting it the other way around, like it used to be.

I drive an automatic because no one has given me a good enough reason to ever drive a manual.
