Well I turn 17 today. Finally becoming an adult.

Good right? Well not for me. Had a MAJOR epiphany two days ago. Now that I'm 17, I have to consider...where is my life going? In one year I have to make a step forward to realize my goals and ambitions, and today I learned I've done nothing to reach for those goals. WHat am I doing with my life?

What's the point of all this? Well, this is actually aimed for the younger eGO members here and I want to warn you that you may seem young now, but adulthood will come fatser than you think, so plan ahead and keep moving forward. Otherwise you'll end up like me.

So good luck friends. You're gonna need it...

Thank you im 12 and decided to make a living working at a parkour related job, and doing parkour the rest of my life:D

Part of me thinks it's good you are reacting this way, yet another part gets worried. 17 is a great age, you are still young and can goof off and have fun, yet you are slowly getting "slightly" more mature.

No worries mate. You are suppose to figure out what you want to do with your life as a junior or senior in college. :P

Ok so I turn 20 soon, and believe me i get where u are coming from lol. Ive switched majors in college, all or quite a bit of your friends leave, you meet some new ones in college. Luckily ive had a job for over a year now XD. But yeah the future is quite blurry and bleak at the moment. Been really lazy started practicing some of my musical instruments again, play CS:S, trying to find something i enjoy.

You on the other hand have a few more years of High School, enjoy and cherish the moments, find something that you like to do while you are there. Keep going to school, try what you like and try to enjoy life. Best of luck to you :P

P.S. Real life is hard, but it has its awesome moments

thanks for the support guys. its not TRULY a sad birthday. All my family and friends are there for me still. I'm pretty set on my life, just concerned on the progress I made so far to get there

Well, the problem for me is, I'm turning 17 in April, but I'm only a sophomore in high school, and I have pretty much everything planned out for my future.

It'll get worse but you learn how to deal with it and you'll look back and laugh at yourself when you were younger.

Well I don't want to spoil your moment of glory for you, but 17 is not really adulthood in my opinion.

Sure, you may feel like you're an adult and mature, and want to decide where your life is going, but the truth is that you have years before anything like that becomes anything of consequence.

Take for example the path I took. When I turned 17, I too felt the throngs of adulthood within my grasp. I made plans to go to college and made decisions that I thought would put me on my path through life. I went so far as to work hard to make it to the National Honor Society, graduate in the top 10% of my class (500+ students), and applied for colleges.

Somewhere around the age of 18 (end of my senior year) I had settled on going to college for computers with a minor in theatre arts (technical, not acting). I was so sure and I had already been accepted to college, but for some reason completely put off registering. At the time I was working in a theatre doing lighting and audio work on the stage and we put together three shows for the summer. It was the most fun and rewarding experience I had.

Towards the fall of 2005, after graduating from high school, I was getting ready to register for college, but never did. The registration packet just sat on my desk for a couple months. Something didn't feel right about going off to college. I just didn't have the commitment or desire to sit in school for four years. Instead, I was offered a job as a Network Operations Engineer for a small (at the time) internet service provider/webhost. I was responsible for installing, configuring, maintaining, and building servers and networks. I dabbled in all kinds of software, operating systems, network equipment, and tons of other things.

With the level of technical expertise and experience I had after working there, I knew more about networking than any college student with a Bachelor's degree. That was only after about two years. From 2005 to the end of 2007 I worked there, and then I decided to enlist into the US Army.

Currently, I serve the US Army and I was already deployed. In 5 months I ETS and return to a civilian life, as well as a job in the IT industry and hopefully, with my last employer who is eager to rehire me. Since then, I have received several certifications via Army tuition assistance, am set to take a few more certification exams by June, and started my associates degree online (only a few credits so far).

When I was 17 I had no idea or inclination that I would have done and would be doing anything that I have so far. I am 23 now, and I have yet to "grow up" in that way, and some others. Obviously, since I love playing video games I will never completely grow up. However, I am a young adult, and I have a lot to learn and experience. Although, I no longer think that we all have one path in life.

From all that I have learned, I think of life like this:

Life is not about where you end up in life. Instead, life is about how you arrived at where you end up. No one has one set path, and it's the culmination of "detours" and paths that we all take.

I'm in the same situation as you, I don't have a clue what im going to do :/

I'm going to start preparing to apply for the Naval Academy next year. I'm ready and planned.

As "prestigious" as the Service Academies are, they're not all that they're cracked out to be. I go to a Senior Military College, have a friend who left to go to West Point, and hates it there. They actually call her "standards" because she's one of the few who actually care about military appearance, etc. Look into VMI and doing ROTC in all seriousness. Like a Marine CPT. from the USNA Admissions Office told me, "I'd rather have my son or daughter be led by a graduate from one of the Senior Military Colleges than by a USNA graduate for the fact that they have people skills and are well grounded."

Aside from that, to the OP, relax. I'm turning twenty this year. I'm going to the U.S. Army Winter Mountain Warfare course this spring. I have nineteen credit hours worth of science and math (biology/pre-medical major) this semester. Two years from now I graduate college and commission into the Army.

The point is, we all have a lot on our plate. I was in your shoes not too long back. There's no need to stress. Figure out what you're interested in or where you would like to go to school. Do well on the ACT/SAT's and apply to school. It's simple. The main thing to do is enjoy your time and make the most of it. I look back and envy my previous years, wishing I could relive and change things at certain points.

TL;DR: Enjoy your life. Things will fall into place like Crazy said. Do what you think is right and remember, you don't have to follow the path that everybody else is traveling on.

Well I turn 18 in April and I don't feel like an adult at all. I think maybe, maybe, at 25 I will. Anyway, I'm just as panicked as you are. I'm almost done this semester and then it's just one more and I am a high school graduate and it's terrifying. I have no clue how I'll do in university, I'm among the top in my graduating class but there's only 41 of us so it's not really a gauge of anything. On top of that everyone seems to have a plan but me. I know I like math and science, specifically biology, but past that I am clueless. I've applied to one University but I am still awaiting something in the mail so I can send out my transcript. I know I should apply to more but I don't know which.

Damn, you've gone and panicked me just as I should be reviewing for a presentation.

I think everyone thinks at one point in there life were it will be going and none the less where will I end up? But its important to take a deep breath and work hard everyday!

I turned 18 4 days ago. I definitely don't know what I am going to do with my life or feel anything like an adult. I still have to wait on those college decisions and I figure I will just figure it out when I get to college I won't stress it.

I'm kind of in the same situation. I have different choices to go into. I just can't choose one and keep it. I can't make up my mind.
