The R.A.T. Gaming Mouse by Saitek, the Creators of the Cyborg Series

This is GravigA and i will be telling my review about Saitek's new mouse series: the R.A.T.

Quick Notes About the R.A.T Series

The R.A.T. comes in 4 different variations: 3, 5, 7, 9.

Starting from #3, this variation has the least amount of features and lowest specs. But seriously, anything over 2k DPI is overkill.

Since the 7 and 9 variations seem to be simply overkill in terms of features, i will grade the R.A.T. 5, which is actually the best mouse i have ever used at it's price with #7 and #9 simply being there for people wanting more "stuff".

In terms of aethetics, it gives the aura of being lethal, alien almost.
Also, for those mecha fans, this mouse definately suits to my Gundam fanaticism.

The NUMBER ONE THING that i love about this mouse (other than the appearance) is the thumb rest. Simply by adding this little addition, it makes it much easier to move the mouse compared to mice such as the DeathAdder from Razer.

To be honest, i do not know that kind of plastic they used, but it is quite easy to erase the sweat and dirt accumalation from my sweaty excited hands when i am fragging. All it takes is a few minutes with a cloth, and it looks brand new.

Mouse Features:

  • The mouse features a nice solid metal base at the bottom of the mouse that gives most of its weight.

  • There is an adjustable palm rest that can extend quite far for people that have larger or larger hands.

  • The mouse features a part on the back that allows you to adjust the weight.
  • To me, i do not feel any difference, but that may be due to my wrist strength.

  • For personal notes, the dimensions is amazingly perfect (for my hand anyways). Some comments that arose about this mouse before it was released was the fear of poking from the pointy corners of the numerous place.
  • THE DESIGN MAKES IT SO WHEREVER YOU TOUCH WITH YOUR HAND, IT IS SMOOTH.

Mouse Buttons:

  • The scroll wheel has the right tension for clicking the wheel and there is a fat saw style on the wheel to make it easier to scroll.

  • Both the Left and Right Mouse Buttons have just the right tension that it feels that it requires no force at all, but still being able to rest your fingers. Funny enough, Saitek adds the text: "Rapid-Fire", which is very much true when i use this mouse for rapid-firing in B:BC2.

  • Between the Left + Right Clickers and the Mouse wheel is a little 2-way button that is labeled "DPI" that actually makes it easy to change your preset DPI settings from the very easy to install program.

  • Next to the left click is a button that glows in 3 different colors from Cyborg: Red, Blue, Purple. Each setting can store its own DPI settings that are preset in the program, giving a total possible of 15 different DPI settings.

  • (there is the usual fwd and bwd buttons where the thumb is at, but most mice provide this nowadays)

  • ]In front of the fwd button, there is a red button with a crosshair that is dubbed the "Precision Aim". Despite its name, you can preset the DPI value that it will change when you hold this button down.

  • The most unique innovation (maybe only) is the "thumb" scroll. Being a complete new idea for mice, this other scroll can also be used for mostly anything depending on what is preset in the program.\
Interesting Note: you can program the thumb scroll any keyboard binding in sequence.
For example: i would input R, so each time i scroll clockwise, the computer recieves an "R" from my mouse and reloads.
  • (Personally use this to "scroll" fwd and bwd while browsing the internet.)

Pros:
  • Interesting Aesthetics
  • Sturdy Buttons
  • Easy to use Program
  • Precision Aim
  • DPI Presets + BLU + RED + PUR Button
  • Adjustable Palm Rest
  • Solid Build

Cons:
  • Versions 7 and 9 are the same only with the added features of adjustable thumb rest length and width (but its pretty awesome) and for the 9: no wire.
  • Weights seem to make no difference due to the metal base.

OVERALL RATING: 9.8/10
BRO RATING: Broseidon, Lord of the Brocean

Additional Notes
I have been using this mouse for over a few months, and I even bought it as a gift for a friend whose Deathadder was simply getting old to get his opinion between this mouse and Razer. To this day, he continues to game with this mice and is actually ordering a R.A.T. 9 (God knows why).

Happy Gaming Edgegamers and keep in mind that if you need a mouse that could help you kick some extra arse, the R.A.T. is there for you.

Thanks for the review - the RAT looks very nice. I've been thinking about getting one, and which one to get, when my current mouse goes down. Looks like the RAT 5 is the mouse for me :)

A while ago, the Goddess of Blueberry Bakery Buckets favored me with the original Saitek Cyborg mouse. It was...definitely the funkiest mouse I'd used to date. You could expand/retract the size of the mouse via onboard preset buttons; the feature sounded good, but the motor broke pretty quickly on mine leaving it stuck at one size :(

Hahaha what the hell? "Broseidon, Lord of the Brocean"

I should be getting a RAT3 today.

Personally use the RAT 7 and find the extra features to be great. I moved up from the basic Logitech laser mouse from 7 or 8 years ago. The Cost is no big deal as for me the features and options make this mouse a suitable long term use product. I treat my stuff as best as possible and replace with what I can afford or as best as possible.

The RAT is a great product line for gamers personally, and when compared to Most other gaming mice on the market, this is the best.

I first found out about Saitek from their Cyborg mice and i thought it was simply amazing in terms of design and features.

Basically to me the R.A.T. is THEE new Cyborg, feeling much more sturdy, reliable, and with much more bang.

And if you do get the RAT 5, feel free to put up what you think on this thread!

I got a question about the 7 honestly.
does the thumb rest width and length adjust seems really sturdy?
Also, do you find yourself twinking it until it fits like a glove?

The thumb rest only moves if I apply a lot of pressure to it while using the focused dpi mode button (Red one). which well is a fair bit as my grip is a little overkill.

I found it very easy to get it to fit right, was basically as wide as possible. The up to 5600DPI is great for when using tanks and heli's/ I can tweak each of the 4 settings and bam this and my aim is quite a nice sight to enjoy!

amen bro. having a huge DPI setting is very awesome also when your driving a tank lol.

And thanks for the report! ill probably buy the RAT 9 when i can.

I have a rat 3, the plastic they used is NOT good though. It's tough and stuff, but sweat STICKS to it and eventually the cyborg head logo will wear away (like in 1-2 weeks)

Hm. It's a good thing my hands don't sweat. :P

I think it's pretty gross how a lot of people's hands sweat when they play games. Really gross.
