Connect pc to hdtv

There are a couple ways and it depends on the tv and your video card. Some hdtv's have the same adapter on the back as monitors so you can connect that way or you can connect using an HDMI cable. Hopefully your dad's tv and your video card are the same connection cause then it's an easy connection otherwise you have to buy adapters and in my experience they don't always work so well.

Most modern video cards come with DVI to HDMI adapters. Some even have HDMI on the card itself. Since you have a 9800gt I don't believe you have to worry about S/PDIF. If you don't have an adapter, just Newegg it for $4.
well good news is that i have the s/pdif port, so all id have 2 do is get the cable to do s/pdif to hdmi. however, im not gonna do that because right now i really need to work on getting a better job so i can set some $$ aside to get myself a better tv, so i can get this up on my own tv instead of his.
This is pretty much a long explanation in a nutshell.
Most HDTV's have both a VGA/D-Sub connection and a HDMI (duh?) connection. Some even have a DVI connection, but I've only seen a couple with a DVI. Some of them just have HDMI's and standard cable and a/v connections.

My HDTV has a vga port on the side. I don't know if that's standard, but vga cables are pretty common.

VGA wouldn't carry audio though, and analog...ew.

Yep, and you have to have an HDMI cable of course. They're not the cheapest, but it's nothing like it was 2 years ago.
