New PC Specs & 1st OC Attempt

Hey Everyone,

It's been awhile since i've posted on the Forums, RL has become too busy these days. Besides that, I just got a few new PC Parts, and wanted to share it here first... ;)

New Specs:

CPU: Intel 2600k @ 4.63Ghz (I plan on joining the 5Ghz club later today)
MOBO: Asus P8P67 PRO
RAM: Corsair Dominator DDR3 1600 2x 4GB
GPU: Nvidia GTX460 (PhysX: EVGA 8800GT)
PSU: Corsair PRO Series 1200w
SSD: 2x Mushkin 60GB RAID0
HDD1: WD 640GB SATA2 (Incoming)
HDD2: WD 640GB SATA2 (Storage)
MONITOR: Samsung 27" (CSS @ 1920x1080)

Case, CPU Cooler (Corsair H50) & DVD-ROM are still the same as before. You can see Pics of my modded Antec 900 here:

Ahh dang, I wish i had one, But i want the i5 version i want it sooo bad!
 
Why did you get the AX1200 Corsair PSU? The 750-watt version would have been just as good, but it would have been a lot cheaper.

For future SLI. I had the Corsair 620w, but only had 2x PCI-E ports. This PSU will last me awhile.

1200 is still overkill. By quite a lot. It would have been better to get an 850W. Your system barely pulls 400W. Having a 1200W is just stupid.

I'm sorry, but you are incorrect. I couldn't have gone with less than 950, and that would have been borderline. I'm not sure where you come up with 400w, but you are way off.

a single 460, and a 2600K pulls barely 425w under FULL LOAD

I mean, its cool that you want to be "future proof" with that psu, but you could have saved some money, and gone SLI right now.

Uhm... actually, Phobus is right. 850 is being generous for SLI unless you got some really freaking beefy cards.
 
850 will even run 580s in sli.

*With plenty of overhead. 580s don't pull as much as people would think. THey don't pull a full 500W at all times. 580s in SLI with a 130W CPU barely pull 625W at full load. Yes, full load. Barely 625W.
 
These guys are right. Your estimation for the power needed for an SLI system is way off. The power supply that you've got right now could run 3x GTX 580's farily easily. Each GTX 460 uses about 2/3 the power of a GTX 580.

Those power supplies are at their peak efficiency when around half load. You're not even getting close to that. You should have gotten the Corsair AX 750-watt PSU. It would have fit perfectly for GTX 460's in SLI (or even 580's) and you would have still had a good bit of headroom left.
 
To be fair, companies will typically exaggerate the draw on their components because they assume people will buy crap PSUs. Also, I have heard newegg will exaggerate draw because they want you to buy more expensive PSUs as well.

1. get on steam plox

2. If you really want to be in "peak" efficiency, probably want to be in the 80% load range

1. I totally forgot Steam wasn't open. Getting on now.

2. Yup. But a lot of people think (for some reason, probably PCP&C propaganda) that a PSU is most efficient at 50% load, so they buy based on that.
